I'm almost done with my crackerbox and need to find a way to mount the balancer on the flywheel end of the engine. I have a chain drive mounted where the balancer should go. Anybody have any ideas? Running without a balancer does not seem to be a good idea. This will be a small block chevy.

Hi,
I used to race 2.5 inboard hydro and we used the same direct drive off the crank. We never really had a lot of hours on these engines, but we all ran without harmonic balancers with no problems.
Go with what you feel comfortable with, or ask a couple of other cracker guys what they do. Check the APBA site for contact info.

The balancer is not really necessary for an engine to run. It is there to help even out the tortional surges of the firing stroke. In automotive applications it also makes a handy place to hang pullys, timing marks etc. I have a couple of old small block chevy's that never had the balancer, just a factory plate to mount the pullys.
