Among other claims: The Swift Boat Vets say the AARP is really an insurance company like the Good Sam Club.
They make a lot of money off the supplimental Social Security plans they sell seniors which would evaporate with sucessfull private investment.
They also say in counties that allow partial private social security funds, the funds return 5+ times more than the gov't run fund.

Your take:
There are several counties in the U.S. that were able to opt out of social security years ago when there was a brief window to do so. In Texas, they have been investing in Bonds....not the stockmarket, but bonds. They have averaged 8% return on bonds!! This is not a 5 year program....25 years in the running. These don't make the news because they are an example of how the socialist security is failing.

I'm all for me being able to control part of my money I pay to SS. I'm 34 and have a long ways to retire. Something has to change and the longer we wait the worse the problem will get.

Right now SSI is 12% if I'm correct. The maximum benefit after donating that money your whole life is like $1500/month. If you took 2% (as per Bush's plan) OF MINIMUM WAGE and invested it privately from age 20 to age 65 you'd retire with $6000 month. Anyone who calls Social Insecurity a "benefit" is ignorant.

1. Social Security is going to go broke. By playing on the fears of the old and feeble, the liberals are preventing a smooth transition to a better plan. The Democrats are going after the AARP members and playing on their fears of being cut off. It makes it harder because the only benficiaries are the young who have no thoughts about retirement.
2. In order to make a transition, it will take over a decade of implementation. Even so, there are going to have to be some changes that many will not like. The retirement age needs to be moved in accordance with life expectancy. The cap on SSI taxing needs to be raised.
3. Any investment program will not affect any retirees for at least 30 years. However, it will reduce the amount of funding for current receipiants by the amount placed into private funds.
4. The amount of money and the type of investments allowed must undergo a rigorous legal and reality challenge. As they say, the devil is in the details. As much as I think we need the change, a sudden influx of investment cash could knock the markets for a loop. Individually, it is not much, but on a national scale we are talking billions. Therefore, it will require a long phase in period.
5. The best plan that I heard was having the government put a sum of money into an investment fund at birth. When a child is born, money is paid into the fund at the time a SSAN is issued. If the child dies before retirement age, the beneficiary is the government to use for the funds for supplementing survivor benefits. The problem is finding a secure means of investing that much money.

Our illustrious Senator Reid keeps saying that by privatizing you would get 30% less in SS benefits. Do you think that may be because you are putting in that much less and also getting 70% more back.... :D
I am so sick of the secretive, fear mongering that goes on from both sides of the aisle but at least the Republicans have a little more of the, " Let the people be in control of their own destiny" attitude.

Reid is a douchebag. I hope he suffers the same fate as Tom Daschle, the sooner the better. :jawdrop:

I read the Dems are starting to realize they are loosing the battle. Bush at least has to try and fix SS. Even Liberman is more towards fixing SS than the rest that don't want a change. The Dem parting is splitting by age. The younger want a change, because they know they won't get anything. I read this yesterday on Yahoo.
