Been happy w/ Cingular for a while... I haven't had any lost calls and get good reception in most areas.

I have Nextel, so hell no I aint happy..their service sucks !! I had to get an additional cell phone (Verizon) to take up the slack in the areas where Nextel sucks. I'd dump Nextel in a minute, but I'm in a 2 year contract, and I can always use the extra minutes anyway. My opinion, go with Verizon.

Ditto on what Jeff said about Nextel. It sucks. I'd get rid of it if it wasn't paid by my employer.

There are several variables that need to be taken into consideration when trying to decide what cellular carrier is right for you. Just because your buddy says "Hey Verizon is the best deal in town and noone is better," doesn't mean Verizon may be the best deal for you.
First and Foremost where do you travel?
I assume from your line of work that typically you are in mainly large metropolitan areas. If that is the case then there are several potential carriers that will work best for your needs.
How many minutes do you use and what times do you make most of your calls?
Are the majority of your calls incoming or outgoing?
When choosing the right cellular provider you have three REAL options. Verizon, T-Mobile and Nextel.
Verizon. If you need service everywhere in the country and you travel to a lot of rural areas that noones ever heard of then Verizon is the way to go and noone is going to make you as happy as Verizon will.
T-Mobile. If you travel a lot typically stay in Metro areas and need a LOT of minutes T-Mobile is the way to go.
Nextel. If the majority of your calls are incoming and you're buddies all have Nextel then Nextel is a good option. They offer free incoming calls on most if not all of their new plans and unlimited direct connect.
Sprint is garbage period. I dont care what anyone says they are crap and that's all there is to it. I used Sprint for 3 months and had nothing but problems with their service. Trying to get customer service through Sprint is a total nightmare due to the fact that the majority of their call centers are over seas so you can barely understand a word that their people try to tell you. Not to mention their pricing isnt even competitive with anyone elses.
Cingular. Cingular isn't really an option in my opinion. Their GSM network is not much bigger then T-Mobiles and their calling plans are substantially more expensive. You can get a Verizon plan for the same money as a Cingular plan and Verizon will make you a lot happier.
Personally I use T-Mobile. I have tons of minutes plus blackberry and I pay $66 a month. The service works great in all of Southern California and works pretty DECENT in Havasu. There are parts of town where I dont more then two bars of signal but for the most part it works pretty good there. I do hit a few dead spots driving between here and Havasu however there is one on 95 and two on the 40 maybe a total of 30 miles where the phone is completely dead.

Nextel has more technical problems than you can imagine. Their coverage is very poor in comparison to their other nationwide competitors... in many places anyway.

I have Nextel for my personal phone and Verizon for my company phone. Exact same coverage in the areas I go, drops, poor reception, OK reception and great reception. Nextel I like better because of the direct connect with my wife. Always works (at least for me), a lot of times even when there isn't very good reception (form either). Both work the same at the river (very good). :p

I've used every cell service from Verizon, to Nextel to T Mobile to Sprint on...and on..and on..
I currently use T-Mobile.. Which seems to work pretty good in most areas.. I would suggest T-Mobile especially if you are traveling overseas to japan and stuff.. Verizon was the best service that I've ever had..

I have a personal phone with Verizon and a company phone with Nextel. The Verizon seems to work much better, even with a two year old phone. The Nextel is not very good. I have had pretty good luck with my Verizon service for the last five years or so. Some of that time was in Denver and the last two years here in So Cal. Both places had terrific coverage, IMO.

I have been with ATT (Cingular) for over 15 years. Quality of service has varied from year to year mainly I believe based on the phone equipment I have been using at the time. Overall I have been happy with them.
I travel allot and it seems that Cingular is better in the west and Verizon is better in the east.
Let us know what you decide on and how it works out for you.

Kenny,
Verizon is the best when it comes to cell service. Airtouch was the big dog with the most towers on the west coast, Verizon bought them and expanded the network. Bell Atlantic was the big dog on the east coast and Verizon bought them and expanded the network. They bought up a few companies in between and the put more money into the system than many others.
Alltel is on the same technology as Verizon, but Alltel buys time from Verizon on their towers, at least they used to.
From what I understand, CDMA technology is more "compact" than GSM so more callers can fit per line/tower. That also relates to fewer dropped calls. CDMA is now catching up with GSM as in features such as video and gaming capabilities. In AZ, Airtouch was huge, and Verizon expanded the system to cover so much more.
The only bad thing about Verizon was that with CDMA technology they used to be behind a little in the cool phone department. They test all phones for 6 months before releasing them to their customers. Europe is on the GSM network and all the sweet phones over there eventually make it here. They get all the cool sh*t first, and that trickles to the GSM carriers here about 6 months later than Europe.
Hope that helps. I can score you a deal on a Verizon phone as well, just let me know.

Do you use the roam selection on your Sprint phone. I rarely loose a call. Roaming in SO Cal on the digital side uses Verizon. It is FREE under most current plans as long as u use under 50% of the time on Sprint cells. It works from Havasu to I-10, often on analog, but it works. Make sure your phone is set to automatic.

Nextel, the way business is undone. I have one for my work phone and it sucks. Dropped calls, calls that never ring in, voicemails 2 days later. Good stuff.
I have Alltel for my personal phone and have never had any problems in 5 years with them. It works in Parker where many phones can't do anything, such as my Next-to-hell.

I travel all over the country (mostly the Southwest), and Verizon was great.
However, when I got moved to a French Fry Specialist, they gave me a Sprint company phone.
It sucks.

I personally disagree..I left verizon because I kept getting dropped calls..and I wasnt always gettin good reception..especially in the parker area..I switched to Sprint and havent looked back..I have perfect reception everywhere I have been..evan through Ehrenburg..Customer service I have not had a problem..no longer than a 5 min hold time..which is more than I can say for Verizon..eeshh!! I think it just depends on the phone u have.. dual or tri band mode..
The best is suppost to be Att/Cinuglar now that they merged...they were able to expand and use more cell sites around the U.S also if ur not getting good reception check what network ur on..they have a new network they can set ur phone up on that will work a whole lot better..with all the new cell sites.

Switched to VERIZON from Cingular because SOMEHOW my mobile to mobile minutes that were SUPPOSED to be free showed up on my bill and they could not explain how this happened or how to correct it. :argue: Cingular suggested that I increase my minutes to cover the mobile to mobile overage.
WTF, pay more for minutes that are supposed to be free...that is assinine.
With Verizon, My coverage is better and my bill is about the same. Works great in Havasu also.
