I am purchasing a 28 deep V that weighs appox 5500 lbs. the motor I purchased is a Merlin 540 CI @ approz 680 HP with approx 550 HP delivered to the drive shaft. The manufacturer of the boat is telling me that a Bravo 1 is compatible. Now, mind you I am no gear head, but in doing some research I know that thios drive will not last but maybe 1 trip on the water. My question is what would be the PROPER drive for this boat? I think a Bravo XR would be ok but the builder is stating there is not a big difference in the Bravo 1 and Bravo XR. Any help would be much appreciated. By the way, this motor and drive package has worked without major problums on thier 26 and 29' cats. Thanks!

Who is the builder? With that kind of advice, I would like to know who I need to avoid. :notam:

Go with the stronger XR so you don't have to worry about the drive when your on the water.

From Mercury Marine's website:
Bravo 1 rated up to 400 HP
Bravo 1X up to 450 HP
Bravo XR up to 575 HP
Show this to your dealer.
Go with the XR, and if you have a problem after that, take it to Max Machine Worx .

The
XR will be more than enough to handle that engine.
Your dealer needs to go to school. The XR is VERY different than the Bravo I

Well it looks as if the builder is going to credit me 3000.00 dollars for the Bravo I. I am going to purchase a remanufactured bravo XR drive with a new upper for 5000.00 dollars. All in all I feel pretty good about this deal. Just a little peace of mind when I'm on the water. does anyone know how to reach the administrator? I am trying to trick out my posts but I am having a hell of a time!
