Found a 66 Malibu I am thinking of buying to restore. Anyone know if the Malibu came in "SS" trim? I don't think it did but the emblems are there. This thing is a total ground up restoration required but it has all the good stuff. Buckets,console,auto,a/c,pwr discs, pwr steering and a 396 out of a 69 Chevelle. I guess it doesn't matter is it was true "SS" since it has the wrong motor but just curious......I know, this is a boating forum, but you guys know so much about so many things! :)

I don't know but you can get the body tag and vin# and decode it easily many web sites with the info. Hope this helps. cool car anyway and if its not a true ss a good candidate for prostreeting would not feel bad about cutting it

Also, Revell makes a model of the 1966 Malibu SS (see http://international.ehobbies.com/1000-1138.html).
Have fun!

Hey ,the bodys are the same just the emblems and vin tag #s are different and of course the running gear. This a very easy car to clone if u dont care about it being a true SS. Also under the hood were the vin tag is the first three number on a true SS will be 138, malibus are 136 and 137 this is a quick ref.If u r paying big bucks for one there are some more areas to look for these numbers also hope this helps :D

If your going to restore it there are to ways to go:
1. just make it look clean with the equipment that you mentioned
or
2. sell all the 69 stuff and buy the 66 equipment that came with the car.
what $ are they asking?

The Team Chevelle site above is very informative!
As others have noted, Malibus can be SS, be sure to check the vin to make sure it is not a clone. You cannot tell just by the options on the car, sometimes they got ordered with weird stuff.
Original Parts Group is good, they have a ton of stuff, but some of it is from Overseas and very cheap, just make sure you know what you are getting. There are other resto stores around, especially in the So Cal area.
The best place to get parts and bling is the Pamona Swap every month or so, I rebuilt my 67 with many parts bought there.

Flagship.....maybe....drum brakes, thin tires lo power engines....the 63 from an asthetic standpoint was a looker....but I remember people getting rid of the split and going with 64 glass cause the split bothered their vision...conversely...I have made more than a couple 64's into 63's by adding the split...lol...I have owned many pre 67 vettes....Im my opinion...tha baddest of the bad ...in looks and performance was the 67 435hp big block cars....although I would never own one built after 67...keep in mind....that todays vettes can blow right on past any midyear.....in comfort....with the air on..with a small block..on regular gas...and get decent mileage....lol :)

In 64 and maybe 65 the SS package was an option on a Malibu. 66 and later there were 3 different models of Chevelle, Malibu, SS and 300. The 300 was the cheap bare bones model. I'm pretty sure that in 66 you would not find a Malibu SS. Also the Corvette was the only Chevy that had disk brakes in 66.

I had an original '66 SS 396 convertible Chevelle back when I was 16. Took me 3 years to do a frame off resto, but when it was done it was all worth it. I grew out of the car stage a while ago and I sold the Chevelle so I could get the boat. I have been looking for something like that again to get into, but right now is not the time.
Nodig, that car would look great, but what I might recommend is to find a car that is possibly a little more complete. You can get a car that is about a 6-7 on the resto scale for about $6-7k. The nice thing is that they usually come with all of the parts already on the car. I am sure you know it is not the big things, but the little things that get very expensive! A badge here, chrome strip there, it all adds $$$.
My car was a basket case when I got it and it took a lot more time and money to get it to the point that I wanted it than expected. The more parts you can save, the better.

Also check under the back window they like to rust out there.

It does have a console, and there is a bit of rust under the rear window. Its been in Az for a long time so the rust is not as bad as it could be.
BTW, the vette I had was stock except for the motor. I had a built 4 bolt 350. Dang it ran good too. Positraction, no show, just go! when it came to the green lights. 120 was no problem on the freeway ramps, the nose would just lift up and the car would just get with it in fourth gear! Used to love to have a little rice rockets try to blast past me on the freeway. Just romp on the pedal and BAM! toast! AHHHH, no wonder I sold it, too old for that shite! lol!
Oh yeah, it was noisy, it creaked a little, no insualtion, used to sweat my ass off going to Vegas. (But they always parked it in fornt of the doors) 1963 had the "only" fake hood louvers, split window so you could not see out of the rear view mirror, brake vents that GM would not let Zora open up, bad (single Hydraulic) drum brakes, still, oh what a thrill to drive.....
