A buddy of mine just purchased a 25' Daytona with a 500HP, XZ drive with 1.36 gears and a shorty unit. He is having a hard time figuring out what prop to run. I suggested to try a 24 Bravo to start with.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have the same set up with 1.50 gears and I run a 26 bravo. No shorty. I don't know if this helps but what the hell. :) Trial and error I guess.

Thor, not sure what prop he should be running with the 500. I run a 24 or a 26 on my Daytona with the 502 and 1.50 gears. I am not sure if they would fit on the XZ drive but I am willing to let him borrow to try it out. Let me know.

What your buddy needs to do, is run the boat with the prop it has on it now, and record everything. He needs to go to a competent prop shop and provide them with the information.
They will need to know the weight of his boat, how much fuel it carries, approx load of people he expects, temp he expects to run the boat vs, temp the day he ran it for the results he is providing, rpm numbers at wot, outdrive gearing, prop presently on boat, etc.
There is no black magic to properly propping a boat. Proper information is all that is needed, and a good prop shop will get you right there, and a minor tweaking from there will get you spot on.

what props has he tried??
with that gear ratio i'd say a 24 would be just about right...

about 75... if it's the boat that i think it is (yellow and grey open-bow walk-through) it was origionally set up to have a whipple charger, hence the 136 gear ratio... typically we'd set it up with a 150 and 28 bravo and it would do 80+

He had that one and got rid of it. The current one in this thread is closed bow, white with blue tribal flames and a polished shorty unit. Bitchen looking boat IMO. I told him it would run 80 with a light (very light) load.

Okay guys, here is the deal. My buddy ran a 22P Bravo 4blade at the rev limiter and got 74 mph out of it. He also ran a 24P 4 blade at 4600 rpm and got 73 mph out of it.
What should he do now. I was thinking of a 5 blade option for him in a 23 Pitch.
Any suggestions.

hmm... well if he doesn't mind putting some money into it, i would suggest that he either switch out his lower unit to a 1:50, or put a whipple on it... and if he doesn't want to do that, he's more than welcome to swing by here and borrow a few different props to test

Kidstuff,
It sure seems like you have to have some good power in order to run something other than 1.50 gears.
Also, what is the cost to change out the 1:36 gears to 1:50? Ballpark.
thanks.

right... that's why i suggested putting a whipple on it.
i'd say to change out the gears it would be somewhere around $600-$700, and about $3500 for a completely new lower unit... he might want to check out the offshore only classifieds... someone might want to trade

Thats so sweet of you Brandie!!! Can I take you up on that offer??? How about a 38P 4 Blade or a 36P Hering 6
Blade, I promise if I jack them up, I will send them back to you exactly how I take them off the boat. LOL :D
