well, i am kind of new to boating, did not have the kind of money to spend on a nice pwr boat, however i bought a chapparel day crusier. I seem to like it alot. Just wanted to know though how i determine which prop to use. they come with a 3 fin aluminum prop, i was thinking about putting a 4 fin 19 pitch prop on it. I usually travel on lake havasu and in the gorge. Can somebody please give me some information on which type of prop to use on that kind of boat, and what kind of differences it will make.

welcome back to boating! How much horsepower does your engine have? What length is the boat? Are you looking for top speed or hole shot?

Depends on what the boat has for power and what size it is. We need more info.

If you're looking for more top end then stick w/ the 3 blade stainless steel prop. It will give you a better hole shot and maybe 4-5 mph on the top end. A four blade prop generally gives you a better hole shot and more control of the boat at idliling (sp.) speed but you'll lose a little on the top end. Good Luck.

It's only fair to pass along info to new boaters. I think we all had these same types of questions when we started out.

Also What Does Pitch Mean?????
Pitch is the angle of the blade on the prop to simplify it. 3 Blade props run in odd numbers and 4 blade run even numbers. If you're running 220hp and going to run a 3 blade, I would stick with either a 19 or 21 or 4 blade a 20.

pitch is the angle of the prop blades that screw threw the water. A 15 pitch means that it will propel your boat ahead 15" per revolution. the formula for calculating your speed is: rpm x pitch (inches) x ratio x .0009497 divided by slip factor. The slip factor is the difficult equation, but a boat like yours, if not too heavily loaded should have approximately 15 or 20% slip. Performance boats can get the slip factor down to under 10%.
For those others to help recommend the correct prop, be sure to list your red line (max rpm's). Regardless, go to a stainless prop, they are far more efficient due to less flex. If you go to a 4 blade, you may want to go one size under your current 3 blade. Good luck...

Hey Kiddunot, I have a heavy 21 footer. 350 small block 260 horses. I'm spiining a 3 blade 21P to 5200 rpm. Speedo only goes to 50 so I don't know the top speed but I'd say its around 55, definatley under 60.
With 220 horse power you're probly looking at a 19P for max top end, but be carefull. If you load the boat up (with weight) you'll have trouble getting the rpm up and you'll be worse of then if you had stayed with a 17P It just depends on how you USUALLY use the boat.
Good luck.
