I do not post here much but I do lurk here a lot. I have a Nordic I got a while ago and I am starting to get the project off the ground. Anyway, I got an LS-6 uncut block that needs the basic machine work. I decided to debur and give everything a once over. I have built many SBC's and only one other BBC. My question is about the camplate. You can see in the pic that there is provisions for one. I found the part number from comp cams see pic also. What I need to know is that it states machining required. My guess the snout of the cam needs a shoulder on the end of it and also the back of the cam gear needs to be turned down to make up the difference of the thrust bearing and the plate. Is this correct. Please advise if I am wrong. Also I do not remember that all BBC had provsions for this. I am talking Gen IV motors here.
Thanks.
T.J.

Are you running a roller cam? If not you don't really need the thrust plate for anything. Thousands of BBC's were originally drilled that way because the old heavy duty truck motors had a gear driven cam. It was just cheaper for them to have one setup for everything. Eventually the tapped holes went away. I say just slap a chain on it and forget it.

Even with a roller all you need is a button!.. Also an easy trick to save cam gear wear on the block is to put an 1/16" wide .030 groove in the cam bearing from the oil hole out!..

my gen V came with a front oil gallery plug drilled with about a .040 hole through it to squirt oil onto the timing assembly.. dont know if all gen BBC have this but my book mentioned it on the gen 6 also .. just a thought .. R.B.
