Is it bad to run engine on the trailer with the garden hose? Why would one want a jet away?

if you were racing the boat and needed to some tuning and had to rev the motor to lets say 4000 rpm the would be bad for the pump. as has been said many times on this board( not to be a dick) its not the best thing to do but , it happens! i wouldnt rev the motor over 2500 in the drive way with out water to the jet( aka lake or river) , those things are pricey but can save lots of money in seals! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

I wouldn't rev it at all on the trailer, and I only run it on the trailer with water going through the pump. If I want/need to rev the motor, I disconnect the drive line.

It isn't so much an issue of seals as it is impeller to wear ring clearance (so long as we're only talking about running it for a couple of seconds) The problem is that the rotating assembly in a jet is not ballanced when its out of the water, so if you rev the motor up, the impeller could torque over to one side and hit the wear ring, opening up your clearances and slowly degrading the efficiency of your pump. The tighter your tolerances, the worse the effects. The packing material is the other area that suffers when running the motor out of the water. Even if you you have a hose up the intake cooling the packing, it is not the same as the boat being in the water. The bottom line (at least for me as others will surely post differing opinions) is do like HB recommended; if you need to run the motor for a while, disconnect your driveline. This will let you do whatever you need to with the motor with absolute confidence that you aren't doing anything detrimental to your pump.
