I think the type of engine has a lot to do with it.

An impeller is about $25, the whole assembly (housing, wear plates, seals) is about $70. As long as the housing looks OK and the wear plates are not all grooved out, you can usually just replace the impeller. However, for the difference in $, replace it all, the biggest hassle is the R&R. Always carry a spare pump kit. No water pressure, no go.. When you replace an impeller that has come apart or lost some pieces, make sure and backflush the oil cooler cause thats where the little pieces of rubber end up and you will have water flow problems (over heating).
That is assuming that you have the old style bakalite (sp?) style. If you have the new style like on the 496 your f@cked. The Pump housing is brass and is good for only 2-3 impeller changes (200 hours or so). Then you have to replace the grooved out pump at the tune of $500.

If anyone has an old housing (the 500$ kind) from the newer 496HO"s, I would be interested. A friend and I were talking about the cost of braizing and CNC machining them back to life but I don't have an old pump to work with.

rex will have it or aps-speed/mair @ the zoo
Problem is, boat is there, and I am here. The sales guy at Rex today says I need to know which kind of impeller I have on my motor.
I would think that all HP525's use the same impeller.

You can refinish the plate side but the other side of this unit is too deep into the housing to mill.(did I just say the unit is too deep) :D I had a buddy who tried to re work his could not do it. so it is 500 bucks for a new one  I have heard that merc is working on a replacment unit out of plastic(still needs to be replaced but much cheaper) or steel(much harder then brass but will rust) instead of the crap brass that they have now. all we can do is wait and see.

I HEARD (key word is heard here) that someone back east makes an impeller out of some kind of blue rubber material which is supposed to be better, or guaranteed for something or other? But I never got more than that? Anyone got an inside line on info to this effect?
And I replace the impeller every season.

I replaced my impellar about two weeks ago after 65-70 hours on it. I noticed some scoring inside the pump, so I think next season I will replace the entire unit. He he, I said unit.
One half of the pump

Dude, that is pretty worn for that many hours! Run it in the sand alot? Shallow water? You will have to replace that pump next time for sure. If yo9u didn't haver closed loop cooling I would venture toi guesss that your block was sanding up and you wouold be having some hot spot issues. One big advantage to closed loop cooling!

It's installed, on a new 540. The Merc pump was an '88, bolted right up!

Keep it out of the sand. Push off to deeper water before you fire up..... the aftermarket one looks trick.

On the newer 496HO pump, is it just the impeller that needs replacing? From what I see, there isn't any wear plates. I am going to tackle mine this week, any tips on replacing the water pump impeller for the 496HO would be appreciated. Tight space I'll be working in.

Just did mine a couple weeks ago. This is my first I/O and I never knew how important changing the water pump/impeller was until my risers were 10 degrees from melting !!!!
When I pulled it apart there was just a round wheel without a single vein on it.... When I back flushed the system I felt like I was on CSI, and I started to rebuild the impeller with all the pieces in my oil cooler hose.....
So now I'll have a back up Impeller, Prop, fuel pump, starter, belts and hose on board for each trip.... Damn this is getting to be a bunch of crap!!
I'm getting a canoe instead !!!

Phebus,
My 496 is a 2002. I bought a rebuild kit from West Marine in Havasu for ninety something bucks. The kit had the impellar, O ring and metal plates. I believe this kit was meant for the newer plastic raw water pump.
When I pulled my pump out, I noticed it wasn't the newer style pump. I returned the kit a bought the one which has an impellar and O ring only (30 sumthin bucks).
Changing out the impellar took me a couple of hours. One trick I picked up from the OSO boards is to close the vanes of the new impellar with a zip tie. It makes it a lot easier to fit into the pump and just cut out the zip tie once the impellar is in.
Have fun.

Is it easier to replace the impeller with the pump in the boat, or do you remove it and do it out of the boat?

phuggit
04-06-2005, 09:57 AM
I've heard both. It was easier for me to remove the impellar from the boat, because the bracket blocks access to one of the bolts. All of the impellar bolts are accessed from the rear of the impellar. Three of the bolts connect the impellar to the bracket as well as hold the impellar together. One of the other remaining impellar bolts is blocked by the bracket, so I disconnected the water lines and just removed the whole pump.
Maybe this pic will clarify what I'm trying to say. Gimme a call if you want, or I'll be in the zoo this weekend if you need a hand. 951-906-3745.

Just so I understand what your saying, you removed the three accesible bolts, which removed the water pump, allowing you access to the remaining fourth bolt?
Also, you said you removed the hoses, but what method did you use to loosen the serpentine belt? Loosen tensioner, or loosen alternator?
Yes, I will be in Havasu this weekend, but think with tips like yours, and others, I think I will be O.K. Thank you very much for the offer of help, and if I really need it, I will give you a call.
Thanks,
Rick

Exactly. I couldn't access the fourth bolt while the pump was attached to the bracket. I loosened the alternator to remove the serpentine belt.
If you have someone with small hands to help, you might be able to access the "fourth" bolt after disconnecting the water lines. It's pretty tight and I couldn't get my hand back there to loosen it.

Yea, I think you have to have your nose higher in the air then when doing the 496's, and use blue wrenches (Snap-On of course). :D
In all seriousness, here is a link of the install on 500's, and I think the 525's are the same. The tensioner runs in a groove, and if you loosen it, it loosens your belt.Impeler change 500's (http://www.speedwake.com/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18967)

Thanks...
On my HP (I changed it two days ago even tho it looked fine) You just start taking bolts off. 4 of them are connected to the bracket. Leave the top inside one on but loose when you install so you can put tension back onto the belt. Very easy...I am sure the 525 is simular. Took me less than an hour...and I was trying to find my tool set most of the time...kids ya know.
