Please give me your thoughts! I have a friend down in Lake Elsinore, He insists that his 18'Bahnr 454 Chevy built somewhat! running 11-1 compression, Hi-perf. square port heads, Cam 566 lift, running a 850 Demon carb. (no nos, and no blower) split bowl pump, droop snoop, place diverter. What are your thoughts! I say NO WAY!!! He thinks his boat is the shit! What do you think?
Thanks,
Harlem

I THINK HE MUST BE TALKING ABOUT
ON THE WAY TO THE RIVER. NOT AT
THE RIVER

I have a buddy with a similar set up in a 18' Tahiti. We gps'd her at 79 mph, so who knows...
The only way to know for sure is gps.

i've got a motor of similar specs but a bbf.it will only do around 70 no diverter yet.As for 85 i dont think so but would bet hes in the mid 70s.

I have to wonder if the hull can take that kind of speed. I have a Bahner Flatdeck that does 76 on the GPS, and I was told (by Greg Shoemaker, I THINK) that Bahner hulls werent built for that kind of speed. I may be wrong, who knows, just my .02. -DD out

I think he may be stretching it a little. I too knew a guy from Elsinore with a Bahner and BBC. It was mildly built and ran 74 on GPS. If the bottom is straight enough, pump is set up right, right water, right trim and weight, 80 is probably reasonable. Everyone thinks they are faster than they are. No one says "my boat sucks."

Harlem,
I know you are just getting into things here and sometimes this type subject goes sideways. The one way to see if your buddy is blowing smoke is, take him out to the lake and get him on the gun or gps. That is the only true way.....Tell'em to put up or shut up

I know a guy that raced a boat like that at NJBA. It did run in the low 80's. It had a full interior too. He could be doing it. I wounder if it's the same boat?

it all depends. How tight is his pump. What shoe is he running. Is he running a droop. Has he had bottom work done? There are all things you have to take into consideration. At what elevation? The list goes on. I personally like single carbed motors and I have a 850 demon. I love it on my 468 (of course I am way up there on jet size like 92 and 88's or something. But the bottom line is with the perfect water and the perfect set he may be running 80's give a take a few mph. Who really cares anyway unless you are running him. 80 percent of the people lie at the river. They are all 10 to 20 mph faster then they really are. Plus the older you get the faster you were. Just my 2 cents

Bense is right. If it that important, get a gun and head out to the lake with your buddy. Of course everyone wants their boat to be faster than it really is, and if he believes that he is running in the high 80's, well, I guess whatever floats your boat. -DD out

Buy him a GPS.
I alway say, if you think your boat runs 100, don't buy a GPS! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

SuperDave beat me to the draw. Boat #461 THE BAHNER SPECIAL did run about 85 mph in the 12.00 bracket and it was set up with a low-rise intake, single carb, and all iron basically stock Chevy. It's not always the poweryou make, but also the SETUP.

Ah yes, good old Dave Gibson in the Bahner Express. That was a mean SOB out of the gate. The hand throttle was the icing on the cake.
