Hey All,
I finally found a boat that I think I want and my insurance company tells me they won't insure it. I have the financing all set to go (Essex) but don't want to buy a boat I can't insure. Who does everyone here use for insurance?
I am looking at buying a '98 Eliminator Daytona 21 with Pro Max 300 O/B. They say since it will go over 60 MPH they can't cover it.
How much should this boat cost to insure?
Thanks,
Lake Ape

Tell them it's a bass boat........sorry.
Seriously, how much insurance do you have with this company? Just tell them they'll insure your boat or you'll take your business elsewhere. Unless this is the only policy of yours they hold.

They hold the policy for my house, cars, business, general liability etc. but say it's company policy nationwide not to cover boats that do over 60 or that have a tunnel hull.

Cats are tough to insure. Get your insurance before you buy it.
search cats & tunnels for insurance threads and you will get the idea

There are cease and desist orders against IWSF in Texas, Ohio, Washington, and a few other states. Furthermore, they are a Panamanian company that operate also out of Canada under the guise of North American Marine and General Insurance. You run the risk of them not honoring a claim, or going out of business and leaving you hanging. I contacted the California Dept. of Insurance to see if they were licensed here and this is the response I got:
File Number: CCB-6088818
Dear Mr. Devries:
Thank you for your inquiry to the California Department of Insurance regarding two entities who are soliciting boat insurance coverage from you.
I have checked our records for both the Water Safety Foundation and North American Marine and General Insurance as far as being either an insurance company or a broker-agent. I found no record for either of them being licensed by the California Department of Insurance.
Water Safety Foundation may be a sponsor of the program and North American the producer. I would suggest getting the name of the insurer and the license number of the producer and forwarding them to me and I will be happy to check this information out.
Again, thank you for writing. If we can assist you in the future with an insurance problem, or provide information, please contact us through the e-mail system or you may reach the Consumer Communications Bureau at 1-800-927-4357 or 1-213-897-8921.

If your boat has a top speed over 60MPH DO NOT BS Farmers. When u have a claim it will be denied, then u are screwed. This is not a bash on Farmers, just be truthful. Progressive may write it depending on how they look at the hull design, if not u could end up at Markel$$.
I think by now anyone that is condidering a boat that is a cat, or big HP knows to shop insurance rates FIRST. There seems to be some exceptions when the boat is configured as a deck boat although the hull is truly a cat.

Just so you know you can shop and get all the quotes you want. You will get quotes from a lot of the companies. When it comes time to buy they will sell it to you, then the underwriter will see it and kick it back. You're screwed. You would think you couldn't get a quote if they couldn't write you but guess what, you can. :(
