I am going out to Havasu this week to do some maintenance to the boat. Does anyone know what the Wix oil filter is for a 496HO? I did a search, but come up with contradictory information. If nothing else, if someone can give me the number for the stock Mercruiser filter, I can probably find a cross reference some where.
Thanks

I think it's the first one you came up with... or the second one.

It's the same as a 8.1L pickup. Fram PH8873 or Mobil-1 M1-111

Sorry, I didn't cross to WIX. Fram also has a fuel filter for it. I'll get the number, hang on.
Ok, the original Mercruiser oil filter number was 35-802885T.
The original fuel filter was 35-802893T.
The Fram fuel filter is PS3808 :D

Aw, always been a Fram or Delco guy. Started using the Mobil-1 filters when I switched to that oil. I looked for a K&N filter, but didn't see it. I would also like to find a "full size" 1 qt filter for the 496. I am sure that with so many successfully running, it probably doesn't need it but I am not used to these "short" filters.

I use K&N Filters myself, I don't think you can beat the quality for the price myself. There is on that will fit, but I don't remember the number off the top of my head.

I figured they made it, I just didn't see it at the AutoZone I was at and they didn't have the Xref hanging there.

I went to the Wix website that is linked, and you can go to Mercruiser through their offroad listings. They don't have a listing for the 496HO, but they have a listing for the 8.2L engine. WTF is that, I thought the 496 was 8.1L.

Hee hee.
Luckily, the guy had just had the service done. He always had sleek do it, and they just did the factory stuff. It made it easy, having the quicksilver numbers.

That was the motor I wanted also. A little more mod friendly and had forged parts. I don't know. Lots of plusses to the HO! Closed cooling and whatnot.

I hate the oil filter discussion. Been through it to many times.
Run Fram and your DOOOMMEEEED! Cut them open, there junk.
WIX is the way to go.
Or you know what's even better! A roll of toilet paper. :D
Seriously though. Get the premium Fram if you like, but just don't buy the cheepo Framo. Most all premium filters are going to be OK.
Just change change your filter enough so it's not an issue.

Thanks for the numbers guys, I think I got it. I also was given the winning super lotto numbers for wednesday. :D Does the 496HO come stock with the short filter, or the long one?

Beer-30

Comes stock with short.
Using the standard Fram to get the rest of the regular oil out with this first load of Mobil-1. I'll do a quick turn-around and put a Mobil-1 filter on with new oil.
Fram 8873 and Mobil M1-111 are both short. Bowtie gave us the long and short numbers for K&N :)
TORCO Synthetic Racing Trans Fluid (not ATF) for the drive. Best stuff around.

So it it OK to run Mobil1 synthetic car oil or is there special marine oil? If so, what weight? The Merc manual says to run the Merc Marine dino oil 25w-40. I always ran car synthetic oil in my 460 marine motor with no issues.
And from what I can tell, the 496 is a remote shorty filter OEM and does not look like it would be the same filter as an 8.1 truck motor. BTR can you confirm this?

I have run HO 5W/30 Valvoline in everything I own, and have never had any issues.
It's how often you change your oil more than anything. Don't waste money on synthetic oil if you change your oil in your boat every 50 or 75 hrs.
It's a waste of money. IMO.
Talk to any good engine builder. It's how hard you run and how often you change.
If you run hard and drain your oil on a regular basis your wasting you money on synthetic, graphite or any other super premium oil.
Your flushing money down the drain. In your car that's fine. Unless you run your boat 250 hrs with out a filter change. Then dump it in and run it hard.
Good luck.

The stock Quicksilver number crossed over to a Fram PH8873. If you look up a 2001 8.1L pickup, it calls for the same filter.
Is it ok to run synthetic in an HO? It's just a pickup motor, right? Just because a motor is installed in a boat doesn't mean it wants a different type of oil.
Run whatever makes you feel good. I happen to like Mobil-1. Others like Castrol and on and on.

That is correct, 8.1L. The Merc. filter, Fram, K&N, Wix, etc. may all vary slightly in height but technically, they are the same. It is thread size, gasket diameter, and internal specs that really make the filter correct or not. OE, the 496 uses our GM short, HP-2002. Some manufacturers have different SKUs for the new 8.1L and older 454 GM motors. We chose to redesign the HP-2002 to fit the newer 8.1L while still being able to work on the older big blocks.

So the HP-3002 will not only fit the 8.1, but it will fit my 1998 7.4 Vortec also? That would be great! One filter for both. 1-qt model, that is.
