Does anyone by chance know how anyone could easily tell whether you have a 2004 or the latest and greatest 2005 model XR drive ?? The new 2005 is supposed to shift like silk due to a new clutch cone or something, just want to make sure I am getting what I ordered..

I dunno but
Did you try putting the part # into Merc's part website yet? Just a suggestion dunno if that would help you any.

I know the new Bravo's have a finned style top cap, and I assume the XR does to.

I want my own independent means in which to identify
How is this such a tough question, aren't there certain serial numbers that may be different between a 2004 and a 2005 XR drive ?? :jawdrop:

I'm still pretty sure the '05's have different top caps. They also have different graphics from what I understand. Family and Performance Boating magazine did an article on the new Bravo's. I'll look for it, because it talked about the redesign to a newer sleeker look for the new Bravo's

You don't trust the mighty BD?
Shame on you. :220v:
Drive to Corona, sit down with him and figure it out between yourselves. Bring some malt beverages and go over the outdrives, looking at the intricacies of fine metal casting.
