DN, I heard from someone that Lake Powell could be up 50' by mid/late August. Can this be true? :rollside:

We decided to skip Powell this year for the first time in many years. If the lake got enough water that the cut was open, might just have to change our minds!! :D

Who knows. If they do what they say and keep the dam plugged up, it should come up good.

I know what you mean. Castle Rock Pass is a big time saver when trying to get up the lake and that fricking narrow river channel around Antelope Island can get brutally rough with all the boat traffic going through there.
If it looks like the pass will be open, I'll probably book rooms at the Wahweep Lodge for 5 or 6 nights later in the summer. :D

I doubt the cut will be in the water this year. Mardonzi knows the elevation level to make it work. I cant remember.
The cut saves time for sure. To get to Kane wash/Gunsite area used to take about 15 mins. Going around Antelope takes 50-60mins with wakeless zones to get there. I do like the run up the channel and feel like its part of the Powell experience.

that is great news, hopefully there will be several more feet added before the end of the year.

i think he said(don)needs to come up 75' before you can go that way?
thats a lot of water, what do you think the chances are for this year? :(

I'm not sure of the current lake elevation but I believe Castle Rock Pass disappears at about 3620', so you'd probably need an elevation of around 3625' for it to be usable :D

so many feet do we need ?
About 67' for it to be usable.

64' we just walk them across :D
I'd do it. Speaking of walking them across, have you been up river from Havasu lately? Kurt and I will be out there Tuesday and Wednesday and I'd like to run the boat up through Topock Gorge

their saying 50-60' up this year, lets hope their right
Well holy crap there TnB... with all the rain you sent us last night and this morning.. dang.. more than 50'.. 3615 for castle rock to be passable... from what Don says.

the pass is usable at 3615.I know for sure the last time i went across it it was at 3620 and the water apeared to be around 10 ft.When i was at the tackle show here the park service was there from powell i asked them about it.they said that3615 it is narrow and the tour boat, house boats could barely do it.They wont less houseboats go thru at 3615 anymore(the rental company)had a few dinged props they want 3622 for the big boats.
I probably wont go this year either unless i can cross there too even if i have to walk in 1 ft of water since my boat only needs that much to float then have a beer and pull across. :supp:

My boss and his buddies used to walk the boats through back in the day when the lake was still filling up for the first time. They dredged it years ago too.

There's an idea, dredge a channel about 50' wide and 20' or 30' deep through the pass. I wonder what that would cost?

Aramark actually did dredge it a few years ago. They figured that it saved them around 250k in fuel a year for their tour boats. As far as dredging it again, they did a feasability study 2 years ago and decided against it. They would have to blast and the Park Service and the EPA won't allow it.

tree huggers won't let them
Throw them all in the lake, that will raise the level  :rollside:

Powell is getting some decent rain right now and it looks as is the snow pack is starting to melt and make its way to the lake. Most recent measurements have this thing going up almost 1/2 a foot per day, with the low outflows.
My bet is that we see a good solid 40' this year and with a year 1/2 as good as this year for next in regards to rainfall, I think the pass will be a for sure.

DEEZ NUTS, where are you getting this info? When I look on gf.state.az.us/h lake levels, I still show Powell down 142 (posted on Fridays). Is there a better site? They are showing Powell at 3558.
The good news is that they have slowed the outflow to start bringing the lake up, but 60 feet by summer is wishful thinking. The bad news, Lake Mead dropped back a foot last week.

If the tree huggers would just stop, think, and do what is really good for the environment they would be all for dredging the cut. The gas that is burnt to go clear around is far more of an enviromental impact than a few stick of TNT. The bark eaters just don't want anything, anytime. Maybe a "small" explosion in a camp fire is in order. I would think someone could come up with a few sticks and if asked just claim they are a new brand of hot dog. The Green River through town is looking good today and we had a pile of rain this morning.

So glad Powell is coming up! We have friends who live in Steamboat, just west of the continental divide and they have had way les than normal snow this year. Since the Colorado is fed from this area I wonder if it will have an impact...
