A while back someone mentioned pulling the inlet end cap off the (HP500) Merc. oil cooler. Thank you whoever you were! Since I was having overheating problem last time out, I decided to check mine. Oil temp. was showing normal, but beeper went off as soon as load was on motor. This was AFTER I backflushed the cooler and lines and inspected impeller.....I counted only 4 tubes that were not plugged, about 12 that were plugged with pebbles and 2 w/impeller pieces since who knows when. Yeah, I know, get a sea strainer..... ;)

If you put the strainer after the sea water pump it will keep the impeller pieces out. I know it is not the usual location. Also check the screen size on strainer as most will not catch much as for sand. Yea need to check them coolers once a year if you ask me. I have seen this too many times. Mostly impeller pieces so if any one has lost an impeller check your oil cooler.

Yes this will be a once or twice a year maintenance item now. I believe it cost me a riser. Had to have one made on port side- $800. Hopefully that's all. The low water pickup on drive is right at the bottom of gear housing, and is really good at picking up rocks and sand when pulling onto beach.....

Got to love those low water pickups! Only if you really need one for sure. I would be adding a transom pickup and do away with the low water pickup on the drive. Mine drive low and slow with side holes so I do not have that much of a problem. I have seen way to many low water pickups plugged after pulling of the beach or drag at the sand bar. Sorry for the riser but it could of been worse.
