Wilder, Man those pics from the mid to late 80s bring back so many memories,I remember all those boats. I used to pit for my uncle who raced SE (8 sec.), I always look to see if im in any of the pics cruisin around on my pitbike or BMX.Ill tell ya whats really weird is I recently sat on the holding rope with a few of those boats that I watched as a kid.
One of these days ill bust out some pics, Ive got some good ones from that time.
If anyone has pics from the mid to late 80s of an all white Cole hydro number 921 with a blown Alk injected motor in it, ID LOVE to see them. the boat has since been wrecked at Ming, the guy forgot to strap on his helmet, and it came off during a run, causing him to crash and get killed. Sad deal.

No argument here, that is some great stuff, but just maybe no one has offered you a ride around some buoys?! Most all of us started at the drags! At least our Northwest guys and gals did. All v-drive stuff is good just some is a little better depending on ones experiences! Dont you think? Thanks jErK

These are outstanding pictures. Moments of racing history, I love it. I have to compliment the photographer(s) also. I am a amateur photographer (heavy on the amateur), and some may not know how hard it is to capture these shots. In motorsports, stuff happens so fast that by the time you raise your camera, it's all over. Thanks for sharing, I hope you don't mind if I save some pictures.

Thanks for the pictures of Dago Red one of my all time favorite
boats. Some of the best drag racing in the late 70's & early 80's
was in pro comp flat. Jeff Blosdale, (lookie lou), Denny Vaschel (Flat outta
site), Larry Peto (Drag On), and Tony Ervolina (Fascination & Dago Red)
Nobody seems to remember who these guys were. Beautiful boats and
close competition. Just as close as pro stock drag cars are today.
Tony builds the motors for my boats, I figure anyone who's that much
of a perfectionist is a great person to have work on your stuff.

This was my first flatbottom, a '78 Mako runnner. After I sold it they thought it could run TAF. I never really supported that decision (not that it had anything to do with me). I know all the history on the deal, but anyways here it is. Crashed in Byran Texas in sep. 2003.

I am kind of "Out of touch" with the Drag Boat end of things.
I used to help Larry Moore (Rite Stuff - Ski Flat and One Moore Time- PGF) with his Boat.
I thought once the capsule was more or less perfected that the BFF Boats would come back.
Will that ever happen or has it already?

Cowboy Bob,
It has not happened YET...
There are rumblings about a few guys putting one together.
The IHBA says they will allow them to be run for "exhibition" purposes only.
As I have heard it, they would be limited to MAX 50% nitro...
(I also sure there would be a limit on blower overdrive % as well)

BFF was before my time, but I remember Larry saying that they had a TON of Down pedal, like 2" at the back of the Plates just to keep them sort of stuck at LAUNCH! That would be unreal to see!

To the best of my knowledge, I don't think anybody has gone faster in a T.A.F. than the B.F.F. record which I beleive still remains at 173.81 by Al Bush in "Crazy Horse" which was set waaaaay back in '79. I'm sure somebody has probably gone quicker, I don't remember what the e.t.'s were back then. Nothing like seeing two blown fuel flats. stageing....approaching the tree at about 50 mph, plates burried, nose of the boat almost under water with that classic spray from both sides of the boat......then green! What a sight!!!!

a 25 year difference is big. Imagine todays motor technology in a flat on 50%. They didnt have 14-71's, billet blocks and heads, down nozzels behind the valves, multiple pumps with high GPM volumes on boats back in those days and still hit 173. I think it would be crazy. I would love to see some exhibition passes. Imagine all the old timers that would come out to see that stuff again.

Johnny Heidemann in Nightmare has run 176 and several other passes in the 170's . He never backed up the 176 though. It would be bad ass to start TFF again!!!.

What a sight it was to watch a bunch of Blown Fuel Flats come out of the inramp marina, make a burn out pass letting it fly down to the holding rope. Watching them stage with the nose buried almost submarining and wanting to rotate around the prop shaft at the hit of the throttle was just an unbelievable sight .Interesting thing, I don't remember ever seeing them back the motor down on the holding rope. Fuel volume was much smaller then than now. A modern day nostalgia (sounds weird) fuel motor combo would be more than adequate, ie Single mag, single 20 gallon pump, stock stroke 426 or 392, retro 6-71.
I would definitely pay to see it.

A fuel motor on 50% nitro is not a very good thing, the motor is confused, doesn't know whether it is an alcohol or a fuel motor. From 30% to about 75-80% the motor just wants to blubber and is not very responsive to tuning. Building a fuel motor, usually want to start at 80%, and is happier at 6.5 to 1 on 95%.

Still have the boat sitting in my garage. The motor was sold in 02' and we put a new deal together in 03, ran it one time at Chowchilla, then parked it. Motor is just sitting on the stand, waiting.
Trying to finish up another motor for the river, pop in another seat and larger fuel tank and should be ready for next spring. Would love to come visit all the fast guys down at Big River and Lost Lake and see how I stack up, either way it should be interesting.

"Every jet boat down there thinks a drag race is the distance of a football field."
Is that a problem? Is every race 1/4 mile or it's bogus? I suppose there's a few big cats and tunnels who'd say otherwise...taking even longer to get it up. But then, they run big water we can't. And they usually don't run the river. So not only how fast and how quickly, but how long can you keep it up safely? I'm no expert, but my guess on the river (not track) during a typical day, even an 1/8 mile could be stretching it. The "drag" race on the river may be decided in 300 ft for reasons other than who passes who at 660, 1320 or unlimited distance for that matter.

Hey thanks for the video. Those are PGF boats and the capsuled boat is our boat. Tom Wingo owns the boat and my dad owns and maintains the motors and I help them out whenever I can. It is the Nasty Habits boat that Steve or Mike Cosoletta(sp) built. It is a really nice boat that needs just a few more ponies, they are coming soon!! The other boat is Randy Ball and it is the old 505 boat that Tony drove.

That's a nice poster...I bought it in Chowchilla about 1985 and it's framed and hanging in my game room. Al Bush, Frank Dade, Eddie Hill, Jimmy Wright, Tim Morgan...nice piece of history. The Morgan's Flying Machine pic in the upper left was his Alcohol Hydro (pretty sure) that he held the BAH record for a couple years at 187. That's my benchmark for some guy that has a Sanger hydro, blown BBC, on gas or alky, that's trying to BS you when he says his boat will do 180 or 190. Anyway, nice poster.

You are correct. That is the alky boat he set the record in. He beat the old record by almost 13 mph. it held for a number of years. The Sanger he put the fuel motor in only ran a few times. He switched to a Kurtis soon after going to fuel.

I'll jump in a little too. When they say its in your blood, for me and some of us its because we have been around it our entire lives. I grew up at Firebird always wanting to race or be a part of a team when I was a kid. Instead, my dad never would race his boat and always made my sister and I rumage through the trash collecting aluminum cans :yuk: (it wasn't all that bad, until he had us help sneak beer into the races :rollside: )
Heres a shot of me in 1976 at Firebird during the intermissions they used to have. I'm playing with my little red boat.
Then one after a few years, still playing with my red boat :)

yup tony c drove it at augusta i couldnt make it.We won at OKC,set comp flat record too,and made the final at chow so it has been good for us.Motor threw a rod at augusta(doesnt appear to be serious damage happened when he idled down from a half track pass nothing out block or pan either) Need to remember to turn on fuel pumps but we should be ready for san diego so far have it down to a 4.41 1/8th at 126.Its been a very good ride and getting more use to it
I plan on taking motor to nor cal this weekend
