Im wondering weres a good place to put a oil temp sender on a BBC? Oil pan is not an option as im not going to pull the pan at this point. What about the pipe plug on the outside of were the oil filter is? The boat I just bought (less motor) has an oil temp guage and wire there for it so id like to use it if possible. Thanks for the help.

I bought a new Dan Olson pan this year and had them install a bung for a sending unit. They put it on the starter side of the pan as close to the pick-up as possible 8.5" from the rear of the pan. I was told that this is the most accurate place to take a reading.

Thanks for the info guys, guess i'll put a sender on the oil filter plug.
Votech, i've heard between 190-220 is a good range.

as far as oil temp goes, anything above 180 and up to 280 is good. Synthetic oils are good when run a little warmer.

Don't know where the best spot is to put one in a Ford pan but to answer your question about using the water temp guage to read the oil temp... YES you can do that. Just order a new sender (the exact same one that is used for your water) and adapt it to the pan. Run a wire up to the dash through an A-B switch (A side from the water sender and B side form the oil sender). This way you can switch back & forth. I did it & it works tits.

It's just a 2 posistion toggle switch. You can get one for peanuts at the local hardware store or get a nice marine grade one from Eddie, Rex, CP, or even West Marine. I mounted mine under the dash at close reach. This is not the exact switch but it looks like this...

when you install a sending unit for the oil pressure you shouldn't use any type of sealant that would insulate the sending unit from the block. The reason being the sending unit gets its ground from the block. If this is true what do you use to seal the threads.

I use Loctite PST in the tube. I use it on all fittings water or oil & never had a problem. Good stuff!! I'm sure any non-tape teflon sealant would work though.
