A motorcycle race is 70 miles out and 70 miles back.
Harry on his new Harley averages 80 mph going out but only 60 mph on the way back.
Eric on his Honda can only go 70 mph out, but keeps it up for the entire trip.
Who wins the race?
Assume they started at the same time. How long did each rider take?
My son and I have our answers but wonder if we are right.......... :hammerhea

We don't think a tie is the right answer, come on, do the math.....
There is like a two minute difference....

Well we all know the real truth... The harley would break down before it ever made it to the turn around point....

Alright, at least someone can use a calculator ! But we got Eric at 120 minutes and Harry at 122 minutes and 36 seconds...did you round off?

Rider 1 = 123.4 min
Rider 2 = 120.0 min

The Honda makes it in 2 hours flat, the Harley takes 2 hours, 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Hate to say it but the Honda wins, but the Harley looks better.

I must have rounded of someplace, I am missing 6 seconds.

Recalc gets the Harley to 123 minutes..... don't forget to change the fractions of mph to seconds not .xxx of a minute...

The Honda never finished the race he only went one way. He didn't ride back. Weren't you paying attention?

Its not meant to be tricky like that.... it went 70 out and back....I paraphrased a little when I posted it. Its a real math problem not a riddle. But I like the way you think!!! :D

60min/80mph=0.75*70=52.5min+70min=122.5

60min/80mph=0.75*70=52.5min+70min=122.5
Didn't think to consolidate like that,
70/80 = .88 hour * 60 (to get minutes) = 52.8 minutes .8 minutes is 48 seconds so 52 minutes and 48 seconds to go out.
70/60 = 1.17 hours * 60 = 70.2 minutes, .2 minutes is 12 seconds. So 70 minutes 12 seconds back
70.12 + 52.48 = 122 min, 60 seconds = 123 minutes.......
What gives?

What gives?
60min/70mph=0.857142857*140miles=120min

Yes but then I add 50% and round up...
Here's another one but its easy:
The covered bridge:
One fifth is over the west bank, one fifth is over the east bank and 45 feet over the stream. How long is the bridge?

I think that your adding macing is rounding the hundredths and it throwing you math off on the home work that is
carry on with the biding part your good with that

Hmmm, I will try it with a real calculator....Thanks Mike!
2 minutes later.....yes it is the adding machine....the calculator carries it out further... DOH! :hammer2:
