View Full Version : How To Make My Boat "Air Out"

Alright after looking at pictures of my boat going down river it looks and feels like there's to much boat in the water. The nose doesn't sit up when I'm on it hard. It's a 19ft. Miller w/ 455 olds, Jacuzzi WJ with about a 4 degree wedge in it. I don't really know anything else about the boat (a or b prop?) But it did run a best of 65 mph (gps) with no baffels, no water to the headers, and AV gas going down river! Would a place diverter get me a up to 70mph? I saw this green and white boat at the FC3 with a sick rooster and he was walkin that boat all over the waves. That looks like a pretty thrilling ride!http://www2.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/25272003_0130Image0133.JPG

n8dawg, that boat is riding really wet. A diverter would be a good place to start. Does that boat have saddle tanks????

saddle tanks? There on both sides in the back, pushed all the way up against the transom.

Those are saddle tanks. Some boats have a belly tank up under the bow which kills performance, just wanted to make sure you didn't have one of those.

Thanks for the complements guys! But the chick next to me likes to go fast also! So would a droop get it out of the water more than just a diverter?

Have your stock WJ nozzle cut off by Jack at MPD and you can bolt a droop to it. That WJ wedge is probably hurting your overall performance. WJ diverters by design are pretty weak because of the built in nozzle(its attached to the bowl)...

If you go through all that trouble, maybe an energizer kit? That gives him a better bowl, the ability to use the PD and all kind of other goodies, like a ride plate. The boat is too wet, and he's just using up motor.

Hey Nate, if you are going to spend alot of cash trying to get it right, why dont you buy a used Berkeley pump and go from there. Check with Nelson, I think he had one for sale at one time pretty cheap, and a Berkeley would definitely be more efficient. I dont know about the mounting to the intake though. Anyone agree?

Hey Floored,
A couple of questions for you. Did you weld the adapter to your bowl or just bolt it on? And, did you shoe your intake or just add the ride plate?
Thanks!

I'm getting a berkley pump this weekend for free ( don't know what kind of berkley it is ) but it will be awhile before I can get the cash for that upgrade to rebuild that pump. So in the mean time, I just wanted everyones opinion on if they thought the boat looked wet and if I can get a little more out of it.

I would be curious to know if you would have to change the intake, or if you could just slap the new pump right on the old intake. N8 talk to Nelson 109 I remember him saying that he could get seals for the pump for real cheap. It would be a fun project to say the least.

Just have Nelson do it for you if you just want a standard rebuild. He did mine in my old boat, did a cherry job. Unless you want a trick build up, he could do it. (I think I should get a cut if he charges you, for promotion. lol)

I didn't realize how much performance an out of tune pump can take. I'm hitting your speed in my boat with a mild 460 w/ logs & rebuilt jg. No PD or droop. You have OT headers and dual carbs.

no, that picture isn't a true set! I just like it.
I've been looking around and I can't find a pic of my boat with a good set.
I don't have the hp that most guys here do, but with the place diverter, droop and ride plate, my boat rides pretty high in the water...

If you want that dangerous ride feeling, next time we are out. You stand on shore and say hit it. when the rope gets tight jump in the air and hold on to the handle and I will pull you around with the divertor up all the way. But just to make it safe I will give you a life jacket. hahaha.
Your boat runs hard, be happy it starts and you do not have to throw gobs of money into. You know more then anyone that when you want speed you better be willing to pay for it. Plus if you start messing with your boat then I am going to pony up to compete. and with the twins coming that is going to be hard.

Well if you want to go that route, then theres not much you can do without spending money. If it were mine, Id keep the WJ instead of setting a different intake in the boat. Ive never compared the two, but it is very likely that it wont be a drop in deal. Be cheaper to keep the WJ and have it rebuilt. As far as the energizer kit, you could go that route too, but you'll end up paying more money than if you had Jack do a blueprint to the WJ parts. With the energizer you are getting stock quality parts, that still are in need of a detail if you want max performance. The WJ can b worked into a quality pump, it just has a few short commings, nothing a couple hundred bucks wont fix. Way cheaper than buying a $1600 kit. My .02...

Cole13- your boat air's it out good just when your cruzing ( I know from all the pics I have of it... by the way tell Jen good job on taking pics of us.) I just gotta get my boat to ride on top of the water. My boats already faster than yours but I just wanna blow your doors off!

I will, lets see some, I know she took like 10 pictures of your boat. Your boat is faster then mine granted. (Here comes the excuses) I am handicapped when it comes to timing and tune-ups, The pump needs to be re-built, I have not put any time or money into it in three years. This is a good thing. The bimini top is always up, ummm there has to be more. Oh yea. I weigh more then you do, have two batteries in the boat. Oh and I have a Chrysler! That should be about it.
But with all of the above, I still have yet to go to the river and have a bad time! It gets us from A to B, with out being towed.

It is 31 miles off the 10, about 10 miles away from Big River. I know that N8 goes to Naci alot. THe first couple years we had the boat we would go to Naci every other weekend. But the camping there got to expensive, and they would charge us for the dog. We found this place, and can run all day long on glassy water. And the camping is much cheaper.

the adapter is bolted on. the ride plate and shoe are one piece machined. I haven't tried to adjust the plate for more perf. pump is 6 yrs old now so maybe I need to pull impeller and have it detailed.

It's just a spot on the river in front of the Lost Lake Campground.

It is just a spot on the river, but if you go down river about 2 mintues, there is a little inlet that when the water is high looks like a lake. It is kind of marshy though so we usually just float in there.
