What really is a "Bench Racer?" A group this forum caters to?
Winter upon us, seems as good a time as any to clear this up...

Bench Racer: one whom sits (could stand, kneel,etc.) and reads ***boat, Hot Rod, Car Craft, Tractor Pull, Monster Mag, etc. cover to cover and can respond to every possible answer to tech, trivia, diagnosis and repair questions without actually having ANY practical mechanical background and/or actual mechanical expierience in the craft of racer/mechanic.

Jungle Boy's first up with an interesting definition.
1) Shit talker
Seems straight forward enough
2) Bags others gear
In an effort to make his own look better no doubt. Does open up a question though. If the baggee (subject of baggers comments) retaliates...bagging the baggers gear in self defense, does that automatically make the baggee also a bench racer?
3) Never raced
I figured racing fits in somewhere. Seems simple until you look closer. Do these races have to be sanctioned? Does this mean racers by definition are incapable of bench racing? Or just that if they did bench race, it wouldn't be called bench racing? One more thought, if someone races once does that make him/her immune to becoming a bench racer or participating in bench racing or do you have to race a certain number of times a season?

Hoss, was hoping you'd contribute, being one of the terms founding fathers if I remember. In fact, this board's name in some ways can be credited to you. Not saying you bench race of course! Your definition seems to have a more mechanical flavor. I noticed you broadened the racer exclusion to also include mechanics? Not sure if you intended this, but I'll go with it. You brought up another interesting point, but I gotta go for now...more later.

In laymans terms: One who knows how to do everything/can tell others "how to" but put a wrench in their hands and DON`T know jack nor do jack either.
Of course I started out as a bench racer. I personally feel that it is a great starting point in any craft.
The problem (if any) is when someone whom pays to have their stuff done yet tells others how easy it is to fix it themselves and gives a step by step accounting of the how it works method.
The racer part has nothing to do with actual racing per say. Its just a name or cliche`.
Again there is nothing wrong with the act of bench racing, just the ones who don`t get past it yet BLAB that they are pro`s.
In other words, you know the fella that hangs out at the speed shop, doesn`t work on shit, you haven`t seen a tool in his hand, yet can tell you how it works, why it broke, and what its gonna take to fix it. Ever notice how he`s there when its done and firing up. Next he`s tellin` everyone how WE fixed it? That is a bench racer(full blown). I believe you get my point and the full understanding of the definition. As being one of the "founding fathers" as you say (thanks) I should have the right to state the definition.
Now, let the flaming begin!

The proper definition or should I say common aspect of a bench racer is;
"..an attempt by drivers of very different vehicles/boats to compare times and determine relative performances. (IE; tell lies about how badly you could have beaten the other guy if only you were driving equal cars/boats)" - as noted by Carl Scragg.

Hoss, that racer cliche part I was thinking about earlier. Your broader definition seems to imply a whole new group of say "Bench Mechanics" or "Bench Tech Experts" as well as others. In addition to magazines, I suppose these forums could also be a source of information for your definition of bench (racing) experts. The decider based more on expertise or experience level rather than actual racing connections. Which makes your comments unique.
So far, the only common theme seems to be: Exageration or outright BS in portraying one's abilities or the performance of one's rig.

Opinions are great and I listen to them. The argument we had was a simple question made difficult. And yes, sometimes I am a bench racer. I am guilty of being what I despise at times. I don`t feel like getting dirty at every shop I visit. I too like to drink others beer, although it seldomly goes like that.

If you're in the shop, under a tent or on this board and NOT on the rope you're "Bench" racing. Get it? The person doing the talking: a racer, non-racer, professional mechanic, non-professional, freakin' newbie...etc. or stealing your beer makes no difference. Being a racer doesn't mean you know how to build pumps. Being a pump builder doesn't mean you know how to cut the lights. Being a newbie doesn't mean you don't know sh*t. And NOBODY knows all the answers.
Ok, stealin' beer maybe?
As for the original (now notorious?) Bench Racing "Fag", well, SuperDave was the first to be tagged, and I joined that club shortly after:

But I like my definition because it's more positive and seems to fit what most of us enjoy doing on these boards...when we're not out enjoying the water of course!

I like the new one, but I'm still having a hard time getting the original out of my head. You could probably tell by the weather today when I was reciting it and when I was concentrating on my work. Tomorrow I'll give the new one a try. :D

But what they did to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was wrong
when metallica used Daves music to launch Metallica's career
after firing Dave Mustaine from the band and the only thing Dave asked of them
was whatever they did just do NOT use any of his music!!! burningm
Metallica ended up having to pay Dave Mustaine royalty monies for ALL the music of Dave's they had stolen and used on their early releases eek! :cool:
Which in my opinion kept Dave Mustaine from being even MORE successful
with Megadeth by being ripped off of what was actually HIS music!!! :mad:
I got to hang out with Dave Mustaine, Dave Ellefson, Al Petrelli & Jimmy DeGrasso
back stage after a concert 11-10-01 with a buddy of mine that knows
a LOT of rock stars personally and wanted me to meet some of these guys!!! :cool:
Last Feb. I got to hang out with REO Speedwagon & Styx!!
I had a GREAT time meeting & BSing with all of them :D
All of them really enjoy talking & joking around with you when
you treat them like everyday people and NOT untouchable celebrities
or some sort of Rock Gods you may worship!!!
They actually do NOT like being treated that way at ALL !!! :cool:
They are in fact very cool people on a personal level!!!! :D
