Anybody that tells you to buy an Optima either sells them or owns stock. Odyssey, no comparison. It's like saying a Mercedes and a Hyundai are the same because they are both cars.
I had 3 Optimas on my last boat. No problems. I hear the raves about Odysseys, but do they last longer? Better for stereo?

Most people kill Optimas by not charging them properly. If the heat up, they'll boil (and vent) water which can't be replaced...then they are just another paperweight.

I had 5 Optimas in my last boat, I probably replaced each of them twice. I had 4 in the Shockwave and I replaced each one once, before switching to Odysseys. So far, so good. I have 3 Odyssey 1700s and 2 Optima red tops now. I'm pushing 4400W (rated), probably closer to 6000W at volume.
Hey what's up battery guru....John :boxed:
What kind of play time are you getting with the 3 odysseys?

I shouldn't have to be an engineer to put a battery charger on my rig. :p
No...but most people who buy them should at least have a triple digit IQ...
...so they can read the instructions. :notam:

You'd be surprised to find out what my IQ is. I'll give you a hint, I'm a 1560 SATer. ;) BTW, my Optimas didn't actually come with instructions, I bought them at American Battery and the guy said "here you go, put the red here and the black here." :D
That SAT score is for short-bussers...your family must be proud. "Run Forrest, RUN!"
As for the instructions...there's this new thing called "the internet"...maybe you've heard of it?

A couple of big group 31's that came with it. Apparently...weight is not an issue in a 10,000 lb. boat. :notam:
On a side note...I don't think you could go wrong with either. How big are you going on the stereo?

I run 2 odessey 2150's for the stereo & 1 odessey 1200 as an emergency starter. Hands down a better battery with a longer warranty.

Better just get a loooooong extension cord.

Geez... I'm planning on more than one batt!
Nonetheless, it'll be better if you'd just follow me around. Note to self: Buy extra large fenders.

You probably won't have the discharge problems I have/had with mine. I would say either battery would be fine, but I still recommend the Odyssey from personal experience.
I'm running a Soundstream VGA800.2 @ 2 ohms, a VGA600.2 @ 2 ohms mono and a pair of Kicker SX1250.1s @ 2 ohms mono. I have like 100 lbs in amps. :rollside:
Brilliant!!!! :D

If you can get me a DCB shirt with a big pic of Dave on it...I'll wear it (kinda like the new Powerboat pg. 108)...and a big caption, "Hollywood Dave for President".
And how about on the back, "Kool-Aid does a boater good" (maybe a pic of Carlos)
Size wise? I'll have to get back to you...I seem to be growing by the day. :(

For cranking, I think the Optima red top is the only way to go. Nice and clean (no acid spills), small, tons of power, will last forever, and can be had at Walmart for $150 CDN. I haven't found anything that compete.

Interesting! I don't own stock or sell them and have 3 of em in my boat. Going on their 5th season with a 2300 watt stereo. They are still going just like new.
I'm sure either brand is fine. But my experience with Optima has been stellar. Since my IQ is low, I guess I just got lucky! :D

What about the guys who run the Trojans 6 volt in series? Wasn't RD and Froggystyle doing something like this?
BTW - I have 2 Optima yellow tops that push a Pioneer cassette deck with 25 watts x's 2 to 2 6" pioneer marine speakers. Funny how I never get any complaints about being too loud. :p

I run optimas but I haven't tried the Oddessey..... The optimas work good.
The interstate "battery guy" told me to use yellow tops for the stereo in the boat. He didn't tell me why.
This is of course after I already bought the red tops.

I know the military uses the odyssey batteries so they must be good. I have a 2150 and a 1700 and they work great. However they weigh a bunch. I thing the 2150 is about 80 lbs.

I've had three optimas go out in my jeep in the last year. I bought a set of Odyssey batteries this time, so we'll see. When the optimas first came to market they were great. Nothing like them were around. Since then, they sold to johnson control. A large company that can meet the demand that was out there. The only problem was a serious lack of quality control.
Yellow tops are deep cycle, they are intended to be drawn down very low and are supposed to come back to full without damage.

Two Odyssey 2120 for Stereo and 1 1200 for Starting should be good....Evo22 can hook you up with Odyssey's...if you need them....I went with 1700's before the 2120's came out in the Malibu and it lasts all day...

I would not consider it old school and if you can get your hands on the new Gel 6Volts it might be the way to go if you are not to concerned about weight...

Check your charge voltage. I'll bet you'll boil the water off a wet cell too.
The Oddyseys probably won't make out a lot better.

O.k., I just read a few exerpts from a couple threads and realize that my question really deviates from the question stated in this thread. Sorry if I rehash any old debates.
I am an engineer at heart, so I like the idea of creative solutions and doing things differently.

You may be right, I do have a new 170 amp alternator and a big fan and lots of other electrical junk. It's a mess for sure!
