So we have a new girl that started to work with sales and promotions. She came to introduce herself, but had an agenda. She heard I was good at installing software. How ****ing hard is it to put in a cd in your disc drive??? It starts the goddamn automatic installation. WTF is wrong with people? We live in a ****ing computer world. Would you walk up to somebody and say hey, I understand you can read. Can you read this for me? Or, you know, I hear you can wipe your own ass, can you help me with mine?
OK, I'm done.

Matt, FYI, if an employee starts off asking you to do "little meanial jobs" for them then it's time to say adios and get someone who's a self motivator. I've had lot's of people that try that crap here, and let me tell ya, it's just not worth the drama. Either she's going to take up way too much of your time or too much time of another employee, and that's not what you hired her for in the first place...IMHO

Today is her second day. We brought her in from TX or something. Her resume looks good and she has been in the radio biz for a while. She should be able to do her hired job fine but how do you not know how to install a simple piece of software? In this day and age that is something everyone should know like learning to write. That's just my opinion though.

Some IT guys get pretty teritorial about that kind of stuff. The previous company I worked for was like that, only the IT/IS staff could install programs, no mater how easy it was. My current employer isn't like that at all, as long as the licensing is correct, we can install just about anything we want.
Maybe it's just a little bleed over from her old job....

Hey Matt, have her call me!
I'll charge her 125/hour for your work on the installation, and include some training.
Oh, and I'll give you 85/hour for all the hard work you do! :)
Haven't seen ya in a while!
Have fun!

Very True.....Most of the companies I worked for would not let us load anything on our computers for two reasons was compatibility and to keep personal programs off of work computers.
I won't let any of my agents or my partner load anything. My partner has screwed his computer up so many times and with stupid stuff like screan savers and wall paper that he got for "free" from the internet.
This thread reminds me of the SNL skit of the geeky IT guy that would make fun of everyone that had a problem with their computer. IT guys often forget the computer is the tool....NOT the reason for being in business, unless you sell computers. :D

I've had good employees that were very computer challenged / afraid, with a emphasis on the "very". Some people have zero level of exposure to it...like holymoly said "guys often forget the computer is the tool....NOT the reason for being in business, unless you sell computers". I wouldn't write her off just because she can't install a program. Now if you show here how its done a couple times and she still balks well then maybe she has issues. Just my experience.

I guess to give a little more background I took care of our network for years for FREE. Last year I got fed up told the GM I am done and put a memo out that I am not the computer tech. They now outsource the work and I swear that guy asks me questions everytime he is in the building. (Yet he gets paid for it) So when the first words out of her mouth to me was, "I hear you are the one to talk to about installing software" it pissed me off because people know better than to ask me anymore. Hmmm, now that I think of it, maybe they set her up. :) I wouldn't put it past my co-workers. Maybe I'll just sign her up for some porn sites. :D
