I was wondering how you guys mount yalls alternator. I have a friend that is building a BBC for his jet boat, and we need to figure out a way to mount the alternator. If you could, please post pics. You know what they say,"A picture is worth a thousand words"
Thanks

Does he have brackets, or starting from scratch? Lemme see if I can enlarge a shot of mine. I had the welder make me a bracket using the one of my truck for a template. :D

Here's a pic of mine. I'm not sure if it's clear enough(find out in a second...) Couldn't it be mounted the same as a Ford? Seems like you could duplicate what ya got on yer motor....

That is kinda what I was thinking. Mine is mounted quite simple, using a snap on boxed end wrench, and a Ford tension bracket :rollside:

When I got it, the alt. was laying on the floor of the boat. I ended up taking the one off my big truck and got our welder to copy it out of a piece of plate. The s-shape ended up a little off so the only difference is on the slotted end, the bolt goes through from the back instead of through the front.
I can try & get a clearer pic if ya need it this evening...
The alternator is mounted just like it is on my 460 in my old '78. Pivot point on top, slotted bracket on bottom. Pivot moint is a piece off all-thread with a spacer made from heavywall pipe. Slotted bracket mounts using one of the bolts on the front motor plate.

Greaser, what style motor mounts is your buddy planning to use, 4-point, 3-point or rail/plate system?

I'm in the process of mounting my alt. right now. My boat has the rail motor mounts and there is a hole drilled on the front plate on the driver side which the alt bolts to and lines up with the pulley. All I need is a way to adjust the belt which should be easy to do.

Greaser,
Here is a pic of my alt mount. Word for the wise the mount will see some amount of vibration so build it acordingly.http://www2.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/1501lines.JPG
Good luck

Chrome alt. bracket, and some aluminum angle. I have spun it up to 5900 RPMs, the belt stays on, and it shows no sign of breaking.

on mine the alternator bolts perfectly directly to the front plate of the rail kit. I use a turnbuckle attached to on of the bolts holding the plate to the motor and the other end on the top of alt to adjust tension.. So far so good. and it tucks it as tight to the motor as possible without touching so it fits inside the shroud over the front of the motor.

Stupid question.... Will an alternator work spinning the opposite derection. IE turned so the pulley is facing the engine. Tell me I can mount it this way and it will work. I have seen afew lately mounted this way and it would take care of a few mounting problems for me.

It will work. I mounted mine this way. I used a 4wire alternator, as they have a lower RPM 'turn on' speed. Still dont start to fully charge until 3000rpm. While i made my own mounts and coupler i am told someone makes a kit. I did it cause i did not like the exposed belts. Not shown in the pics are the fan shroud i made to eliminate the 'finger guillotine' that you see between the mounting bolts and the fan.

Mike;
Do you sell the direct drive kit for a SBC???

No sorry don't have for sb. It would involve making a different plate, probably different length standoffs. The hub where it registers in the balancer I think would be the same not positive w/o researching it. I've had lots of guys buy our components and then make them fit other engines, blowers etc. All parts are available in kit or separate.

I spin mine like this, if you have the room..........

if you squint your eyes it looks like a small electric motor is driving your blower!
did you guys use a rubber or whatever type coupler between the harmonic balancer and alternator?
they look awesome without vbelts, nice jobs

some boats cant run the extra length though.
