Need advise. This is the Cam Comp Cams recommended. As you know, you can call twice and get two different choices. Seems to be a lot of overlap in the duration. IS THIS CAM TO BIG?
Specs
454 being stroked to 496
9:1 Compression
IMCO Power Flow Exahust
781 Large Oval Ports nothing special
5,300 RPM MAX (scared to turn it faster)
Barry Grant 750 Sea Demon
Cam Suggested
Extreme Marine 11-240-4
@.050 Intake 234 Exhaust 244
Lift Intake 564 Exhaust 566
112 center line
RPM RANGE 2000-6200

Hey BigJim...
Comp Cams are very gd cams...i have run them for years in a # of different engs...usually they try to steer u rite on there recommendations...if u dont feel gd about there suggestions...try calling a few other cam manuf & see what they say before u make a decision...as far as ur mtr goes...everything sounds gd to me...i think u will find tho...that u will need a bigger carb...somewhere in the 850cfm to 900cfm range...u dont want to starve that mtr for gas!...also...maybe a little head work...match the ports (I&E) and clean up the pockets...otherwise...sounds great...just my .02 cents worth

Bigjim, That cam is actually quite mild. Which is precisely what you need with your 9:1 CR. Should work good and pull hard down low and through the midrange. There are a bunch of factors that go into the "perfect" camshaft for an application, but that's about what I'd stab in a motor like yours.

I'm running a very similar Iskendarian setup in my 454.
.565 lift, 280 deg duration, 110 deg lobe centers (running nitrous so stayed back from 112) 8.5:1 comp, large oval port irons, 2.02 intakes.
Still breaking in but runs REALLY strong under the orriginal 700 holley 4150. Just haven't upgraded to a bigger carb yet. an 800 is somewhere in my future.

The cam size is fine,(about 230 or 235 at .050) it just needs to be a single pattern grind, the BBC heads use the same exhaust port for the peanut port, oval port, and the square port! We never use a dual pattern cam in a BBC oval port unless N2O or a blower is used. A single pattern cam makes more midrange torque, just what you need. Just my opinion, but this is what I do for a living...... Timinator

Thats exactly what I was told when I put my current motor togeather. Im running the same Isky cam as SL. My motors .60 over 10-1 comp and also has the 781 heads with alot of work done to them.
