Hello everybody,
I've been reading the forums for a while now and have finally found a boat. I got it at an estate sale for $2700. The lady said that it was a Wind Tunnel from the South??? She said that it had been sitting in a garage for many many years. The paint on this thing is flawless and it looks like an old hotrod. The funny thing is that the bottom doesn't look like a regular boats bottom that will keep me out of the water more. It looks flat with two places, one on each side, that go up into the boat. I'm not sure if somebody can fill these in or not. I think if I fill them in, it will make me float more up out of the water. I wanted something a little bit bigger, but this was a good price for a running boat, so I took it. Anyways, my brother said that he could help me do a few things to it to make it more lake and family friendly. The floors look like little wood squares, so we're going to take everything out and paint the floor yellow to match the boat. It looks like they got tired or something and left the floor unpainted, but it does have real nice clearcoat in it. He also said that he could put one of those waterproof radios in the dash in front of the passenger. I also want to put the exhause down a little and cut the holes out the back so the kids don't get burned. Other that that, I want to work on making the motor looking better and put braided hoses where those hard stainless pipes are going into the block. (the I.D. on the motor says Hardin 454 does that sound familiar?) If it's not a good one, I have a Ford 460 I can put in it maybe next year. I took some pictures, but they came out blurry and dark. I'll post some more tomorrow when it's light out. Any info on the boat would be appreciated.
I hope this works!

That boat looks to be a 79 Southwind Formula 1, although I didn't know they made it in a tunnel hull. The floor is supposed to be that way and people pay alot of money for a parque(sp) floor with a nice flowcoat( the clear coat). I would highly recomend you don't fuc k with the floor as you will be doing the boat a huge disservice. :2purples: As for the Tunnels that is what you need to get the boat out of the water and make it go fast, why would you even think about filling the tunnels in???? Either you are f ucking with us because you really know what kind of boat this is or you should really consider selling the boat to somebody who can use and appreciate it. Don't mount a stereo in the dash, don't fuc k with the floor and don't try to fill in the tunnels. Seriously, I'll give you $1,000 more than you paid for the boat right now just so it doesn't get abused. :) I'm serious.

tunnel with a t-deck top, must be a "wind tunnell from the south"
Phil my-groin, your photography skills are struggling.
Sell it off and get yourself a family boat, thats more of a hotrod or race boat.
Dont paint, fill, sand, grind anything!!!!!!! You will ruin the boat.

I think you all been had. Very interesting boat, possibly a SWTD bottom and a t-deck top. Never heard of one like that before. Does that HIN indicate a Southwind. Mine starts with BXE but it is a "Texas Southwind"

That is a true southwind with the t-deck on it.Southwind made like 5 of those in the Orange plant and none in texas. The new owner that bought southwind from my grandpa made a few like that as well.
Don't touch a thing on that boat and sell it to mudpumper.
I know who the original owner was of that boat, he was fireman in the L.A. area many years ago.
If your looking to sell it call me i will buy it as well and make the drive to wherever you are. These boats are not a good family boats and are really slow so i would just sell it and buy a cruiser or something else.
If you mess up the floor by painting it i will trade you hulls and you can paint the floor in my southwind tunnel dragster.Mine has been regelled and is ready for all the hardware to be installed back in it.
The only thing that has me wondering is why there are no tunnel plates on this thing.
Is this wheeler dealer f'n around again???????

On a scale from 1 to 10 this boat has got to be at least an 8 all the plumbing is hardlined in stainless, everything is rigged beautifully and the original gell is close to perfect. I'm really excited to see it run on the 4th.
Definately a great find, thanks to the southwind website.

I hope nobody got butthurt over that! I was just Nucking with you guys. I've been away for a while now, and when Big Proppa and I took a trip to Laughlin on the bikes, we strolled down to Roadrunners for a drink. While I was there, I watched as everybody started up their bigblocks and headed up river making all the rukkus they could. Then I went and watched Hustlers motor getting dyno'd. A little while after that, I started reading these forums again and it looked like you guys were having way too much fun. I couldn't take it anymore and had to get back on the water.
All I wanted was a Southwind Tunnel. I sold my other one a couple of years ago and regretted ever since!!! Then one day I click a link on the bottom of a post from one of you guys (Southwind dudes) and find this cool website Southwindjetboats.com. (It's outstanding that we have two dudes straight from the fire that know about Southwinds and can provide us with very invaluable information and don't mind doing it. I think it's great!) Right in front of my face is a two post thread from the day before talking about a Southwind Tunnel T Deck up North of Sacramento. I had never heard of such a thing and when talking to the guy, he started telling me everything it had and what good shape it was in yada..yada...yada.... The story goes that a guy's son that worked for a company that supplied Southwinds fiberglass saw the boat or something and had to buy it for his dad. A couple of years later, his dad dies and he inherits a sh!tload of money and the whole shibang. :notam: The guy I bought it off of said that he went to this guys house up in the hill of Sacramento and he had diesel motorhomes, huge boats, and whatever else you could think of. He went into one of the guys huge garages, and there is this boat sitting there with inches of dust on it in the very very back. He had for a couple of years then sold it to one of his neighbors who I beleive was seen a Camp Far West with it one year. Well he was a Truck Driver so it didn't get used very often. Then he gets hurt and wants the guy I bought it off of to buy it back. He did, and he's had it ever since. After hearing that and not ever seeing a Tunnel T, told him that I would be up Friday night after work and would send him a deposit in the morning. Friday comes and I take off at 3:00 P.M. from Rancho Cucamonga and head up to Sac. not knowing what the Hell I was going to find when I got there, but I had the Force telling me it be cooler that I was imaging it to be. I roll into Auburn about 11:30 at night and he meets me at a gas station so we could fire it so he wouldn't get kicked out of the neighborhood. Auburn=Bitchen little place from what I seen of it at night. I roll up and I was expecting to see a regular tunnel top with a T deck cut out and a pod, but nope. I wasn't dissapointed to say the least. The thing is clean almost flawless gel and runs, the trailer has new tires and is in great shape also. We go to the guys house and do the paperwork ($$$) and then I'm off. Made it almost back down to Bakersfield before I had to pull off the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and passout at about 4:00 A.M. I wake up about 5:45 and had left my lights and radio on my battery wouldn't freakin start. No biggy, took about 20 more minutes and then tried again. Bingo! I'm off again didn't stop until I needed gas below Grapevine and that's when I discovered the bow bolt had left the building. I looked in the Jeep and all I could find was a purple shackle thing your keys go on. It worked and got me the rest of the way home to Highland. Now I've got my favorite boat and then some. To me, this was once in very great while type things and believe me fellas, I know what I got and will keep it original condition and try to add to this slowly fading away place we call the "RIVER".
Any other history on this boat will be greatly appreciated.
Here are few pics. Any marks you see on the dash or seats is polishing compound that got flung around. I will detail it this weekend. The floor is flawless and just has a bunch of dust on it. I'm going to polish the floors the same way I did the gel.

Deputy: Other than what you noted, I don't think anything is different about the bottom. I don't know for sure though.
Thanks Mudpumper.
Honda, I paid 6 G's for it.
396, What up Bra, I got out of this game a couple of years ago and did regular life stuff. Had to get a house, got a girliefriend and about to get married. Bought an old vette, got a bike etc. etc. Just nothing feels right about not being on the water in a bigblock. I ran some waverunners around a little bit, but it was like a scooter....lots a fun but don't let your friends catch you on it. :rollside: Been watching what your building also and that sure didn't help keeping out of the water. Yo Shiat is looking good and love to see the pics of the progress you make each week. You've come a long way from not knowing anything about these things!!! Tell Pops Bill and I are doing fine and said hello. Talk to ya later.
Shootingstar, I'm just writing the story of how I found the boat and what the guy that sold it to me said. Go to Southwindjetboats.com go into tunnel hull pictures, then from there go to the forums. You'll find a thread that says "possibly the last Southwind ever made" or something like that. That's where I found the guys number!
Wish I was Trippe'n, but I'm still at work wright now.
Still love ya though!
