A couple of hours after this mornings rude wake-up call I began to wonder.
How many of my friends were prepared for a huge earthquake or other emergency (terrorist attack much greater thatn 9-11)
As far as earthquakes go, the experts say it's not a matter of IF the big one hits, but, WHEN it hits.
I'd been a fireman for 21 years. It's taught me to be prepared both on and off duty. My emergency kit at home is pretty extensive.
At the risk of sounding like your daddy I gotta ask. Are you prepared as best you can be to take care of yourself and your family for days on end in the event of a disaster?
It's no secret that any large scale disaster will deplete all emergency crews' resources. Fire departments and PD's will be handling large incidents such as any public building, power/water facilties, schools etc. We/they won't have the time or probably won't even know about you and your family's needs for some time.
Basically, plan on being you're on your own for a while. May sound harsh, but, it's reality.
There are lots of websites available that give good basic guidlines for emergency preparedness. If you want any guidance look on the web, or PM me ao any other fireman on the boards. Glad to help.

WE've got a decent store of Propane, water and a pantry full of food....Our camper is only a few miles away so I could go pick it up or we could go there if need be. I keep the boat gassed up so we'd have 50 gallons of fuel if we needed it.
Flashlights, batteries, radio and glowsticks we have many of as well. Walkie talkies, and I figure even if the house fell down I could use the pieces to build something decent in a few days.... we've even got a generator at the shop. And I'm closest, so I'd get it first! LOL
Good enough?

The first thing I am suppose to do in a major emergency is make sure myself and family is ok, then I am to call or head into work  We practice emergency drills at least once a year at work,by law I think we have to, and i am even on the emergency prepareness team and we preach about being ready at home for the big one. So to answer your question NO I am not prepared at home. On the other hand my boat is always fueled and ready to go...does that count :D

I've always stored large amounts of supplies. I was an assitant SERE instructor in the military so I have that habit becasue of that. My friends also know this and joke that they are all going to be over here if anything ever happens.

We are prepared. Plenty of canned goods, four real good first aid kits, I'm CPR and first aid trained, keep everything fueled and there is always 120 gallons of water in the motorhome. As a plus I'm like a McGuiver :D

I have been a fireman for a long time, and have preached emergency preparedness forever. That being said, I don't have sh*t. I probably don't even have a flashlight that works. If and when we have the big one, it will be like a survivor series for us. Oh well, roll the dice, and I gamble I'll be O.K.

We live one mile from the 94 quakes epicenter. Had water lots of food (always) camp stuff in the garage. I turned everyone's gas off in the neighborhood and then hmade coffee and breakfast on the tailgate of my truck for the neighbors. After that, no problem just drive 10 miles in any direction and all the markets were no wait. People freaked at first, ran to the local market and cleared the shelves. Quakes are so localized though there's realy nothing to worry about as far as food or water shortages. The biggest problem was no water supply in some areas for flushing toilets. Our water stayed on and I trucked trash cans full of water to my friends that needed it for a few days.
Camp stove and lantern is must though. :D

My wife said "keep fresh water (every two weeks) in your truck and have a few other things along with the water just in case". BANG!!! We had the Northridge earthquake and our shop was destroyed. At that time our home was 2 miles from our shop. The house had minimal damage, but the roof fell in on 6000 square feet (at the shop). "It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times" (sorry to the author). It shook for 3 days and we left for Havasu. We needed sleep and our cats did too. We live in Havasu now and have EQ insurance on our home along with keeping all of our vehicles packed with an EQ kit (water, food, etc). We all pray that it doesn't happen, but we know it will. PS, been thru the 1971 Sylmar quake too. WE HATE THEM! Also, have CASH on you at all times, small bills (not $20's) so that you can go to a store (without electricity) and purchase what you need. NO CREDIT/ DEBIT CARDS without power!

Son of a BITCH!!!! Just had another little quake a few minutes ago. Doubtful anyone else felt it unless you live near me.
I have to bump this. Please do all you can to be prepared. I hate to sound like Chicken Little, BUT, I know there are a bunch of us who aren't the least bit prepared for a major disaster.
This right here (http://www.fema.gov/pdf/library/fdsk.pdf) will give you a good start. Obviously you can add things to fit your specific needs.
Remember, during a major disaster, DO NOT count on local fire and police agencies to help you out.

I dread the day of a mass casualty incident in my area... Nice and quiet with my 30 calls a year.

An MCI stresses every agency. LA City and LA County have huge departments, but, they also have huge populations. IMO, it's all relative to your volunteer companies.
FDNY has about 12,000 firemen and they couldn't handle what hit Manhatten a few years ago.
Nothing beats preparedness.

After the 1994 Northridge quake, we kept water and 'energy' bars in our cars. Don't let your fuel tank go below 1/3. If you really have a big BANG, get your family together (DON'T FORGET PETS!) and come out to Havasu. Let us know you are on your way, (phonecall? E-mail) and we will help you get what you need to get by. We have property to park motor homes on and a shop to repair things. If you get here and have not hooked up, call Fast Fiberglass 928 8544527 and we will hook up. We know it's a scarry time and we can help. Lot's of hotel rooms here, and 'rest' is important. Hope nothing happens, but if it does, we can help.

Right Mandelon, that is a very nice offer. Times like this wouldbe far better off in a group of friends.
BTW, just in case I take you up on your offer, can you make sure you have "chocolate" energy bars for me? Hate vanilla. ;)

"Clown" WE will go to the store and get what ever you want! (tuna flavor?) SHAKEN', BAKEN', FAKEN', OR QUAKEN', you are at the RIVER and you will party as REQUIRED! It's not a 'nice offer', it's what everyone should do in times of need. We needed help after the 1994 Northridge Quake, and we (after 3 days of shaking) came to Havasu, to get some rest. We brought our entire family with us. (like Noah's ark) We pray nothing happens, but if you have a major problem, come here! Many of us have been thru it and know what you need to go forward. Dads! Kids and pets FREAK OUT, stay with them and keep them calm, your 'calmness' will do wonders.

I keep stroke mags around in case there is some sort of cataclysmic event that causes a wide spread Internet outage.

Good morning everyone. Everyone who can fit can head to our house in LHC too. We have RV parking, and can probably accomodate 4 full famlies. Just a thought. Nick
