My res looks a little low so I was going to top it off. No leaks and all is good. Just want to be safe. Is it OK to use Dex-Cool? From what I can tell, that is what is in the motor. Or should I try to track down some Mercruiser Coolant? Stock 2004 496 Mag with closed cooling.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I would just use Dex. It can't hurt it.

That is what the factory at Mercury Marine uses. (Dex Rol) You will be fine using that stuff

Before you top off, though. Warm it up and take a look. Mine goes up considerably with expansion. I hardly ever think of looking when it's in use. Did it the other weekend and noticed the rise.

Heck, if it was just a little low, I would just add a little distilled water to bring it up. It's not a straight mix anyway, and the little bit in the resevoir wouildn't make any differennce.

Thanks for all the help.
So are you supposed to read the level while its running or while its off? Its about an inch below the "fill"line when its off.

fill it when its cold, there should be a line on the res. tank,i believe it may say cold on it,,cant remember,,,,,did you lose coolant?

No, no leaks. It was like this when I bought it with about 10 hours on the motor. The drive gear lube was a little low too. I think it was just like that from when it was new. Its only an inch low, I think I'll just ad a little distilled water like phebus suggested.
Thanks
