I have an old, sun-faded lightweight Merc cowl from a 2.4 BP. It looks like this:

I take it they're made of plastic? ABS?
Has anyone had any luck painting them? I'd like to put some Imron on there.

I hear they make nice hats.... :p
Before you do anything you need to degrease with PPG DX-103...plastics wax and grease remover...(alcohol)....then if the finish will level out with say...320 grit paper you need to spray on a coat of Bulldog BFT ...medium coat....let dry.....you also mix BTF in the base ...and clear....I paint plastics all the time and this works....too bad you are not nearby...I have gallons of it... :p
Bulldog BTF (http://www.autotoolmart.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=11545&p_catid=0)
Buy the quart instead of the aerosol so you can mix it with you're paint
If need be and there are chips needing filled and primed ...you're jobber can sell you the correct putty and primer for use on plastic....I think the stuff we use is made by SEM (http://paintworldinc.com/productdetail.aspx?sku=SEM.39133)
As long as you use adhesion promoter/flex agent on it before and during paint application...you can use any automotive urethane system
More Bulldog facts... (http://www.autobodypro.com/tektips/articles/plastic_sec.htm)

That's the cowl I have been using for the last couple of years, Gary. It's not the one that came from you. The stuff you sent looks sweet.
