I think any of the hand held ones are even reliable. As long as you are out in the open and not going through a narrow canyon or have trees hanging over head. GPS are very accurate now. The need to recieve a min of 3 satellite signals. There great if you want to use one to see how fast at WOT you go. The more expensive ones have bigger displays, more waypoints, larger memory & programable or have built in maps. It really depends what you want to use it for. All the basic models will give your a compass direction and speed. Some even record distance traveled. Magellen makes a nice one for $100.

I use a Garmin hand held. Works great for me.

I've found in a 1/4 mile pass it takes the hand held GPS an extra 8-10 seconds to find the true speed. That being said my boat speedo is dead nuts on with my T-Rex GPS. Well within in a 1/2 mph reading.

Be sure you have the setting right on the hand held. Most of them have a batter save mode. The signal is not as often. the regular mode is much quicker.

where do you find this mode?... I have the same issue on my boat with the handheld..
and I have a Lavorsi installed on my boat that acts the same way..
the GPS cant handle the accelleration..
as Im letting off.. my GPS is still climbing.. If I stay in at a consistant RPM .. it takes about 4-8 seconds for the GPS to catch up.
My manual speedo was right on up to about 65 mph.. after 65 it was off 3mph on either side..

Remember the main perpose of a GPS is to pin point a location in space. To use it for speed, a logarithium has to do calculations. So they might take a few seconds to catch up to whats happening in real time.

I've got the Gaffrig GPS with tattle- tale recall . It moves up/down as you go. Of course my boat isn't as fast as Jackpunx' :D

how fast does your truck accellerate?
now that I think about it .. it dosnt matter.. you can test it on breaking..
try going about 60mph and stoping as fast as you can.. keep an eye on your gps.. see how long it takes catch up..
as for my boat.. from 70 to 100 its about 3 seconds.. We tested it before I put the GPS in..
Sometimes I feel like Im getting ripped off on my speed from the gps.. but.. as long as everyone has the same technoligy for the most part.. then were all getting ripped off a little..
I need a radar gun :D

GI Joes, $100.
Boatersworld, $100.
Pretty much any place that sells electronics will sell handheld GPS.

I have been using a Magellan Meridian Gold & will be purchasing another before it crokes! I have tested it against many different devices including hot boats (Wilkes) radar gun & have found it to be with in 3/10ths of what the gun read at 103... A very solid piece! :)

Your prices are definately the best I have seen, but unfortunately it would be the same price by the time it ships from IL to CA. Plus I am leaning more towards a big store for the warranty factor.

I have a really nice Magellan sport track that I use for desert riding. I can't find a easy speed recall anywhere, Im guessing it dosent have one. I would like the most basic handheld GPS that has a tattle tail for peak speed... could someone post a link for the most basic model that does just that. I just want it to check boat speed.
We had a freind who would always bring one of these out. I was thinking of going in 1/2's and picking up this bad boy for the winter....cordless Stalker sport (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00022E6DI/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/104-5358787-7341523?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance)
