I'm wondering if a 496 Mag HO will be ok for a 28 cat with Dana tabs? What will I be able to expect from it. Speed / plane. Too much Too little ?
Thanks.

We have a Mach 26 with the 496 HO it ran 70 with 6 people and 50 gal. of gas, it planes ok but it could sure use more power. I plan to add the whipple or pro charger after the warranty is up.

I'm just looking for about 65 or maybe a little more. Is that in the right ballpark ?

I think you'll get your 65 and reasonable planing performance if you don't get greedy with the prop. A 24" or maybe 26" should work well. You still looking at the Commander? I believe that it is similar to the Magic, so it's really a 26' boat with a swim step.

Yes, I took a ride down to speak with Sy on friday. I met JB from Commander Boats at Elsinore Sat morning and , well you know how the weather was. Needless to say after 3 or 4 beers in the truck on the launch ramp waiting for the rain to stop, (which it didn't) We took the 28 cat from the ad in ***boat, The red and white one, out for a test. That was worthless. Due to the weather. So we met a second time on Monday. I really liked it but it had the Volvo DPX and I wanted to see what the 496 HO would do. 65's cool with me for now. I guess I could add a Whipple or a ProCharger later for a little more.

Fireman I have a 28 Advantage Sport Cat with a 496 HO.50-60 mph depending on load and temperature. It is a good size boat with an open bow.The engine runs great. It just is'nt enough HP for that size boat. It does plane well enough with tabs down to pull a wakeboarder or me on a single ski (210 lbs.) It is coming out this month and being replaced with a whippled 509. I hope I will not be board anymore.

I know the 26 does about 72 with the 496 HO so I would gues about 65. I went down to Commander last week to see a 26, didn't have one. From what I was told they have gotten a better rigger for the boats, which was a pet pieve of mine. Sounds like SY is trying to put together a higher standand boat. They still have good pricing. Please let us know how the purchase goes and what you think of it.I could use the input.
Thanks, Wayne

One more idea that may or not help you. There
is a fireman in Las Vegas named Chaz Aday. He took deliery of a new Magic 28 Cat with a 496ho about a week ago. He says that one run when he was all alone, in ideal water he saw 76 mph.
That's pretty fast for a 496HO. If you wish to
speak with Chaz in Vegas, call or email me and
I'll get you his number.

Thanks Keith, I would be very happy with 68-70 mph. I've got two boys 6 mo and 3yrs. I've got to keep it in the water. I've been looking closely at putting Procharger in it if I need a little more. The 28 Magic and the 28 Commander are pretty similar from what I've heard.
I spoke to Sy, President of Commander Boats today and he's aware of the "eye's from the forums" that are on this project. I told him I would post pictures of the rigging, gel coat and over all production of this boat as it's made. He knows the weight of what a good write up on this boat in these forums will do for his sales and manufacturing reputation.

Your mind will change quick, mine did. Theres nothing worse than going down the lake at 5,000 rpm at 65mph and a boat cruises by you at about 4000rpm doin friggin 75. To me its not really about the top end.Its about the cruising speed and rpm. Its like driving your car on the freeway in third gear...f that, Im gettin a 5 speed that will cruise at a low rpm but will haul ass if you want it to.

I like the Magic and Commader style, with a higher freeboard, It's just more my style. Although that's a sweet Lavey. I would love it. But the wife is the CFO. know what I mean.
