I just got a used computer Compaq Deskpro EN. Paid $50 including monitor. Everything seems to work but it has Windows 2000 Professional as the OS. I have no documentation or CD's. I cannot get past the windows logon screen. I have tried to use a Win98 and XP to boot from but no luck. Does anyone know if there is a back door login for Win 2000 or does anyone have a Win2000 Boot CD.

This may seem like a dumb question but I've seen sometimes when people don't actually configure the logon screen. Have you tried just hitting the OK or Cancel button without a password? Believe it or not this works sometimes.

is it asking for a user name and password
or just not booting after the windows screen
you can put a 3.5 disk in the drive and restart it you will get a non systems disk warning
remove the disk and you should have the option to start in safe mode then fix whatever is wrong

Tried just hitting enter, esc, and cacel just gives me an error message. Clear the error message and it goes back to logon screen.
I have tried safe mode but it also goes to the logon screen.

call the guy you got it from and ask him for the password

That's what I want to do but I have to get windows to load first or get a Win 2000 boot disk. Once I get windows I will reformat and load Win98 or XP.

I don't know where you got the computer but you can certainly buy Windows XP and then reformat your computer's hard drive.

Give me a couple of minutes and I'll post a link to a downloadable boot disk. It will boot to your floppy in unix. Then it will edit the password hash to let you in.

Goto this site and follow the instructions. If this method works it will just tell you what the password is and let you in. If it doesn't work post again and I'll send you a link to a site that you can download a utility to change the password. Changing a password through linux can result in some data loss so this is the best method as it writes nothing to the hard drive. If you can not boot to the floppy or cd you will need to go into the BIOS and enable booting from these devices. If the bios is password protected you can get around it by moving a pin on the board inside and disable it. Anyway here is the link:
password recovery tool (http://www.loginrecovery.com/)
Just noticed that this site doesn't work to give immediate access. I will post another link in a minute to give you a password editor.

Bootable floppy download:
floppy version (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bd050303.zip)
Bootable CD image site:
Bootable CD (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/cd050303.zip)
I doubt that you need them but if you do you can download scsi drivers that work with the above here:
SCSI drivers (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/sc050303.zip)
