This happened to me and just happened again EXACTLY how yours did. I said FU to my top loader and picked up a used split case in good condition.
When it happened a few years ago we replaced the detent ball, spring, fork and another part, I forget. But it only lasted a while, sounds like it is time for a full rebuild.

i belive mine is a split case 10 degree. it does split right down the middle it has a plate in the middle i bolt the cassel to the stringers off that aluminum plate. i did replace allseal and bearings in the case. the fork assembly has always been a problem since the previous owner did shady repairs. i went thru it did replace the spring & ball assembly. a drilled the cam looking thing a little further so i had a positive lock feeling with the ball. should have done it right but oh well. now i am replacing the whole shifting fork assembley with a steel fork instead of brass. so im at the mercy of this form for help i need information on weather this fork could have been what kept popping out of gear or if it might have been the shifting spline assembly and the fork is a cuaslty. if these splines are needed to be replaced and i cant find them (i would like to have this on the river for the 4th of july leaving this wednesday)
how can i rig this to work
thank you
mike

Have you checked the "dogs" that actually engage "a gear"? The gears are always meshed together, it is the dogs that do the driving. Do you start it in gear, or shift it after the motor is running? The drive dogs have an undercut face to maintain engagement under power. After these undercuts become worn, usually from motor running engagement, there is nothing to keep the dogs engaged and they "pop" out. The shifting fork is the next link in the system, and usually the next part to break. A new shifting fork will fail again if the dogs are worn out and not replaced....MP

I,ve got a set of stock dogs and fork in great condition but if I were you I,d put a shaft release in it and it will give you some beefy new dogs and a steel fork and you will be rid of the spring and ball intirely!!!you,ll have a lock out handle instead!call this guy too, he,s a hell of a nice guy and will give ALL the help and info you need, even walk you through it on the phone,(he,s never too busy to help)254-854-2083

went down saw ron. he stated my dogs were okay. but my cam was to blame fr te problem, we had overtightened the handle assemlbly causing fork to wear on bearing. picked up lockout handle, he says its the very best thing i could invest in on cassel.
thanks to everyone

Ron's a good guy, he'll sit there and finish the conversation with you in his shop to not be rude instead of answering the phone ...
I give him a hard time when he has to call me back cause I know he's probably talking to someone else ... but he usually calls you right back if you leave a message, he's good about that.
I'm glad he could hook you up.
