I am possibly looking at upgrading some power to my Ultra 247 and was curious what a fuel injection or n/a 600+HP motor goes for nowadays. Namely the 540 with 620 HP.
thanks in advance

I'm not sure, but I bet it would be over $125.00 :D
Anyone else?

If I recall correctly, Teague was offering his 620 for around $32k at the show. Could be wrong, but that is what I remember.
If you want a NA 600h.p. motor, I would look into the new GM 572. 620 h.p. and that is actually under rated. From what I hear, they work great as a boat motor too.

Dude, if I put 900 HP in my boat it would be the end of me. 620HP would put me right at 95 mph or so. That is plenty fast in my boat. I have been 79 mph now and it is a kick in the a$$.

You can always start with a shortblock from dyno-flow in vegas, 540, 572, or 598, unassembled for $3,600. Find yourself some BBC heads, other parts and you are not even at half what some of these builders quote.
At 600hp, I've been told the China cranks (CAT and Eagle) are fine.
Check your PM's

Here is some info from somebody who recently installed the Chevy crate motors in his boat.

I am doing a pair of RAYLAR 600's in my boat, that are based on the Merc 496. You might want to contact Ray Broady to discuss @ www.raylarengine.com
My engines will be in the first week in August and the pricing was great with all forged internals and stock mercury ecm and guardian safeguards in tact.
Here are a few earlier pics... I can't show any more or give detailed specs as this is a Family & Performance Boating Magazine project/article.

I f you were to "build" up a motor yourself, 540,565, 572 or 598 cu in, aspirated, you would be roughly at 20k for all the parts and machining.
Quick breakdown:
CNC Block/Bearings=4000.00
Aluminum Heads(Set up for MARINE USE)=4500.00
Callies Crank=1800.00
Manley Rods=800.00
Pistons/rings/ wristpins=1500.00
Oil pan=800.00
Intake Manifold/ Dominator Carb=1500.00
Gaskets=375.00
ARP Bolts/Studs=375.00
Balancer=250.00-400.00
MSD Ignition=750.00
Timing Chain/Oil pump=200.00
Misc Machining/Balancing/Dyno time=1000.00
Well that right there is exactly $ 18,000.00 :D
If you come up with something different you let us know :D I've checked this out a couple of times for cost and it always seems to be right about here, and thats getting the "good guy "prices from friends in the marine business who do this for a living.
Of course you can always use "cheaper" equipment.........
Here are a couple more for the list............off the top of my head-
Exhaust(complete) $2000+ for something decent
Motor Mounts, bellhousing, Coupler, Mounting brackets for accessories, Power steering pump, starter, Alternator, HP Sea Pump, Belts, hoses, fittings, Stainless fasteners, Wiring harnesses..................... $3500+............................................ .................and this is only a carb motor. Add sensors, Another harness, ECU and all EFI components and then you have another few grand, but you can deduct the carb and intake at least. Building a good quality motor is not cheap, and labor has to account for something right...........?

No doubt GT, I just wanted a general price range for around 600-650HP. Take your 600TPI for instance. How much to pull my 496, keep it of course, and install the new one?

The drop in motor with fully polished CMI's and all external coolers/filters is right at $26K. My labor rate is $95/hr. Figure about $2K for the swap(20 hrs). Do you already have a HP gimbal? If not, I would suggest it, and external steering with an XR upgraded drive. It just keeps going......I have tried really hard to keep the cost down on these parts and still buy the best AMERICAN made parts, ITS NOT EASY. One of these high perf packages has to run several hundred hours without any trouble at all. That is why I only offer 5 engines. I have R&D'd these 5 combinations and they all work for the performance minded customer. I can run my 700 intake on my 600 motor and get a few more HP, but then the cost goes up. Its a catch 22. That 600 runs really well, and very smooth. Let me know if I can help.

GT,
I fully understand the cost and have heard really good things about your motor and trust me, you are on the list. I just wanted to get a price range and had a rough idea of what it would cost but really didnt know. I am definitely not the kind of guy that would go a cheap route to sacrifice dependability and quality.

I think for the most part, all of the local guys are about the same in price, Apples for Apples. If there is a big price difference, I am sure it is jusifiable somehow. Good luck. BTW, what kind of boat is this for?

I have an Ultra 247 now with a 496HO. It is a fast hull for being that size but it only weight 3100 lbs. I have had it up to 79 mph on GPS with no gear and limited fuel.

Thor,
You might want to PM Nashvillebound about his iteration of this exercise in a 247. There are probably some other items (tabs etc.) that will be part of the final recipe to make that thing feel at home at those speeds.
