bigger prop causes the engine to develop more power, which makes more heat----if you don't have a cooler, get one---if you have one, change up the plumbing on it and run cooler water

I am running a 555 with about 10 lbs on pump gas. I have to work it pretty hard to get the oil tem over 160 with the cooler below. They are a bit pricey, but they work really well.

Mine usually run at 180...up to 190 once in awhile....with stock HP 500 coolers.

i was under the impression that oil temps should run above 212 F to assure that any condensation or other intrusion of water would be boiled off... my motor ran stone cold prior to installing an oil thermostat that releases at 220 F..
my gauge runs up to 225 and sits there all day...

I've got the harden thermostat cooler that runs the oil at 220. Seems to work just fine. I put the sensor in the pan, not the out put side of the cooler where it's suppost to be, so I guess it's actually alot cooler than i'm reading.

I'm running 10lbs boost and have the oil/power steering combo cooler.
The temp varies to oil wt. and how hard I'm running. 180-190 running below 4k. After a good hard run the temps usually hits 230-235 and then slowly
comes down to the normal 190..
20-50 wt always runs hotter than when run straight 50wt.

well the plot thickens. after changing the oil i noticed some slight glitter in the oil. i cut the filter to find all kinds of small fine bits of what i hope is bearing material. going camping this coming weekend so i wont know for a few days :( i'll post my findings later.

Well I guess you guys got me beat on oil temp. I have a 509 with a 6-71 blower , no oil cooler, 10 qt. pan and I run royal purple. The oil temp runs around 250 and if I start building boost or running over 75 mph or more it will go to 280. Once I bring the boat rpms back down and the temp will go down. I have a gage that reads the inside pan temp. I have been running the engine for 3 years with no problems. Water temp runs at about 180, and a little higher if I run it hard.

Mine runs around 180, if i cruise at higher speeds with some wide open passes it will reach 220-230.
Up to 270 is OK for a max. temp. as long as it comes down to low 200's.

My engine builder say's it's best to have the oil temp sender in the oil cooler that way you can make sure it's working correctly. I have an offshore 14 quart oil pan with the harden 1000 hp cooler with the thermostat. I see 220-240 temps in the pan. I'm looking for a temp gauge that I can screw into the pipe plug so I can see the temp of the cooled oil......My thoughts are, I want to know what the engine oil temp is in the pan because that's what the pump is going to pick up.

I think you could ask 5 different shops and get five different places to mount the temp sensor. :p I guess the real info is to watch for change over normal. Assuming everythings good when you go out initially, you can monitor any changes from what you normally see to avoid potential damage.
OK Sean, let's pull that puppy out next weekend  Went out today, went about a half a mile, came back to the 10-lane. Broke the end of the shift cable. Oh well, at least it broke in forward and I got it on the trailer! Guess I'll pull that shifter cable out tomorrow. Doesn't look too tough.

I run 250-280 above 4k and then 210-225 cruising, its in the pan, screw it as long as the oil pressure is good I am happy.
