I see :supp: All of these pics of rooster tails like ten feet in the air and I'm wondering how? I have a 500 horse 468 chevy an a Berley 12jc-a pump with a manual place deverter. My roost is maybe 125 feet long but only 4 or 5 feet tall. Any info would be great!

Get a hydraulic diverter for starters. It has more travel. Then go and get a droop snoot from Place. You won't regret it. My 330HP 454 made a tail over 20ft high and over 200ft long without hurting the overall performance at all. In fact, the wetted surface at cruise was greatly reduced. Nothin like hitting the side of the Laughlin bridge with a stock engine.....

it drops the knozzle lower in the water as well as giving it about 6-8 deg of up. as for wedge u should have a split bowl with that jc. u can get wedges from a number of makers. pm with your info i can get you some for a decent price........

wedge goes between the bowl and droop or knozzle.

I thought the bridge was alot taller then 20'. Im thinking of the AVI bridge never mind....
Im not a know it all but i thought the jc was not a split bowl. The jg is a split bowl. The hyd. and manual have the same amount of up down, unless you grind it out a bit which i would never do.Also the place droop is i think a 7* up but you need to minus the intake at a negative 4* (on my boat anyways) which gives you about 3* more up.

Is 3 deg. up something that you will notice bigtime or no. And I was confused when he said split bowl too.

if you have a jc pump you cant put wedges in it.it needs a jg bowl on there.

Hey Sleek468, try the wedge first, its cheaper than the droop and will get you the tail. If it works and you like it then maybe a droop is the way to go and you can always add the wedge and droop together for an even bigger tail. You can even reverse wedge for some fine tuning, ie the droop gives you 8* up but you find 4* is perfect, put the droop on and turn your 4* into a down wedge. There are many options (don't forget the rooster booster), but I think you get the point. Just so you know a big tail is not usually faster, its just looks cool. In the shallow river world we run steel nozzle's and trune with wedges. Our best MPH numbers usually come with about 5-10' total height on our tail. There are a few boats out there that will be faster with a droop and huge tail, but for the most part there is a happy medium which will give you more speed. If youy are setting your boat up to be fast, do alot of experimenting and always use the lie detector (GPS). If its a family type boat and you want to show off and overall speed is not the main goal, then by all means, wedge or two with droop and fire away-Aluminum Squirt

Thanx for all your info. And are you sure I need a JG pump to run a wedge? If so how much do they cost, and will that slow the boat down. I have a 1973 18' sleekcraft with the 12-JC pump and I'm running 5,000 RPM's and was wondering if anyone new about how fast that is. O, by the way it's a 468ci. chevy camed, head work to stock oval ports, single plane, Demon 850 Anular. The cam is 568-578 lift and 244-246 duration.

Sleek, all you need is the 2-piece style bowl which is the only difference between a JC and JG pump. Kind of hard to come by used, since so many people want to make that change, and a bit pricey new.
As far as performance goes, it's like Aluminum Squirt said, beyond a certain point, raising the nozzle will hurt performance.
Best anyone could do is guess at your current speed. You should either borrow or buy a GPS and document your before-modifications speed and rpm. This will give you an accurate baseline to compare to.

Hey Sleek...
look at ur pump...if the nozzle is attached with 8-12 bolts/studs to the bowl...then u have a split bowl & can use a wedge...if not...u need to chng it if u want to run a wedge etc...split bowls are not cheap...but u can prob find one on here if thats the way u have to go to get what u want...there are alot of people on this forum that can help u out

your tail should be taller, even with the jc bowl i'd check the cable clamps to make sure the cables are not moving under power and then check that you have full travel in the cable. if you have the floor mount take it apart with a small allen wrench and check the clamps if its a stringer mount just make sure the clamps are tight.

With a 12jc pump you cant put in a droop
