What would power a house. If used sparingly would a 5k get it? Run fridges and freezer as well as some lights? AC (central)? I need to overnight now! Storm coming quick and I got a 9 month old. I`d like a deisel. Thanks.

Better to have too much than not enough. A 10kW would be the safer bet of the two, but a 15kW would be even better. If you oversize it a bit it will burn less fuel as well because it won't be working so hard. ;)

Of your choices 10k if you want to run the HVAC and that might not cut it. 7500 would not start mine. 15k -20k would run everything nicely. I'm looking also. Any hookups out there.

I have a 5.5KW that's only going to run my fridge, some lights and fans, plus my little 5000 BTU window unit AC that I have just for power outages. :)
If I were shopping for one of those big-boy generators, I'd go with the Cummins Onan from costco.com. They have 15KW, 20KW, and even 45KW. What's cool is they have natural gas and LPG configurations.
Edit: (Sorry Hoss, I didn't see that you wanted one overnighted until after I posted this.)
See http://www.costco.com/Common/Search.aspx?whse=&topnav=&search=generator
Good luck.

This city can`t handle it.When you buy the window unit, I recommend looking for the "old fashioned" kind, not the digital ones. If a digital one doesn't see "perfect power" as its power source, it might not do squat. The old fashioned ones (with just knobs) are a lot more forgiving for the kind of power you'll be getting from your generator.
I got mine at Wal-Mart just a few weeks ago -- Fedders, 5000BTU, only $74. I used it recently when we went without home AC for a weekend (being repaired) and it worked great for bedroom-sized rooms.
Good luck!

I'd say 10kw diesel minimum. For one, it is safer to refuel a diesel without shuting down than gasoline. Typically larger tanks and longer run time than gas. I have to rent these all the time, 10KW will do quite a bit. If you buy one, many models available as generator/welder combo so you could still make those custom exhausts while everyone else is waiting on the electricity. Also, if you happen to be on well water, this will likely start your pump when a 5 KW may not or someone elses well who may be able to supply you some water in a portable tank if you supply the electricity. If the storm were too bad, water supply will be hurt also.

I just put my 5.5 together a couple of hours ago (I bought it a few weeks ago during Florida's "hurricane sales tax holiday") -- I might need it if Dennis turns toward Tampa and away from you guys, although it already has turned some toward the panhandle.
Make sure you have some beefy extension cords too (I'm gonna get some 12 gauge ones -- those 16 gauge ones are pretty whimpy for a fridge or window unit AC).
Fuel stabilizer's a good idea too! :)

I had a back-up system in my old house that I used for 5 or so days during the fires of 2003. I had a 7,500 transfer panel with a portable 5,500 continuous/7,500 surge Generac. The meters never came close to max. I was running a 27 CF fridge, lights, washer and dryer (not at same time), and a Carrier 100,000 BTU FAU gas furnace as well as my computer and Dish Network. They have cheat sheets at the Depot that will help you calc your wattage. My house was 1,800 sqft. No AC, it was in the mountains in October.
