What causes a coupler to go bad? Hp? Drive misalignment?

On a stock motor HP should not be an issue. More like alignment can cause the coupler to go bad.

I had Eddie (in parker) change mine out in May. The parts are not too expinsive but the labor will castrate ya. They have to pull the motor to get it off of the flywheel. I had a beefed up racing coupler put on. Got over 800 horse so it was a good investment.

a coupler is not a wear item. awile back there were some problems with the hub spinning out but havent seen alot of that. Couplers are known to go out especailly on B-3s and on boats where you are doing alot of water sport activities (wakeboarding, skiing) because of the stress you put on whenb you stop and go stop and go and constantly turn around to pick up a fallen skier w boat under a heavy load. But a coupler is not a wear item. Remove the drive and clean and grease the splines once a year. itll last forever.

Dry splines will ruin your coupler.

Lost one of the aluminum hub ones once, drive misalignment appeared to be the cause. Alignment and lubrication appear to be the key to an extended life. I changed mine out myself, if you have an engine hoist, it's not too bad to do. Save a couple of hundred bucks :)

Yes, actually I think its my coupler. My boat does go anywhere under throttle. It will go forward and reverse but when given some gas the motor just revs up and the smell of burnt rubber comes from the motor along with some smoke.

Yup I would say it's the coupler. Have fun. :D
