Anybody out there know anything about 366 tall Deck BBC. I found one that I might be able to pick up fairly cheap for my Tahiti project but I know nothing about the 366 engines other than they were an industrial motor

Hey Jshirley78
I Run A Salvage Yard Here In The East, From My Experience With These Motors They Are Not Much Of A Performance Eng. They Normally Came In The Bigger Type Trucks Like 70 Series. I'm Not Real Sure If Manifolds Are Even Available For A Boat Depending On What You Need. Sorry I Cant Tell U More.

the tall deck accessorys will bolt on, but the block won't take much more of a bore----the 427 truck blocks will---make nice long rod 496's and some guys have punched them .100 over

I think Ill be staying away from it then and sticking to a 396 or 454

The 366 is a medium duty truck engine that does not have jet-boat performance potential. However, a 427 tall deck truck engine can be used to make a killer stroker motor. Of course, you'd need a new crank, rods, pistons, and heads to make serious power.
My 2 cents is to go for the most cubes you can afford. Start with a 454 as a bare minimum, and keep your eyes open for a 496, 502, 540, or more.

I agree with jetmug. The 366 was a very solid and reliable truck motor but not going to be a good choice for a jet boat engine. Stick to the regular Big blocks or the big tall-deck blocks and you will be a lot happier. You will also have a lot more room for improvements now and later.

I just repowerewd with a .060 396, and spent a bunch, well not a bunch for a blower motor, and though I'm not horribly dissapointed, I probably should've done my 454. I did the 396 cuz it has a steel crank, H-beams, and forged pistons, and I thought I would save some coin from the 454. I'm pulling 5000 RPM @ 60MPH, I haven't fine tuned yet, and I could supercharge, but when does it stop? I am inagreement with the philosophy of start larger, spend less on upgrades, Have fun, and above all else, be careful!

Guess I shouldn't mention that, had you put the crank & rods in the 454, you'd have a blown 427 instead of a blown 396? :eek: You would have had to buy pistons tho.
Bore & stroke list:
396 = 4.096" x 3.76"
427 = 4.250" x 3.76"
454 = 4.250" x 4.00"
Journal sizes:
ALL Chevy big blocks used...Mains-2.7488"-2.7495"---Rods-2.20"
Rods identical too.:
ALL production big blocks used a 6.135" length rod.
Info from Mortec.com. :D
Sorry to do that to ya Capn'. :clover:

After you buy the intercooler, a bigger blower, put that rig on a 502, then a 572, switch loaders & droops & snoots a few times, Install quick-change nozzle bushings, an inducer in the pump, put a bubble in the hull to help feed, get an even bigger blower, install nitrous, switch from 1 carb to two, to fuel injection, to alchohol, and the wife becomes an ex, takes the boat in the div, and sells it away from you.
THAT's when it stops. :D :D :wink:

SS ,I nearly fell out of my chair when I read your post! I'm still wiping my eyes. My wife read it over my shoulder, and is wondering how much she can get out of a slammed 99 Tahoe 2wd, along with a pretty albiet slow Hondo. I'm not sure what to think now! I'm not sorry, or pissed, it runs so f'ing good. We're running in the Potholes res. tomorrow, Eastern Wa. Have a safe weekend!

396 is 4.094 x 3.76 I'm sorry but Mortec is wrong on this one.

OK, 2 thousandths of an inch off. :idea:
Bore & stroke list:
396 = 4.096" x 3.76"
396 is 4.094 x 3.76
My point was that he could have dropped most of his 396 parts in the 454 block and invented a 427 to blow. Crank & rods would fit as the bearing journal dias. and rod lengths are the same. :shift:

We had a blast this weekend on potholes. My wife got a ride in a sprint boat. After the ride she said she was still my wife, but was going home with him! ( Just kidding, so she says!) I'll download some pics on a new thread tonight. All Smiles on this end. I hope all of you had a fun, safe weekend.
