I am re-building a 396 to put in my V-drive, and I have three sets of open chamber oval port heads to choose from for my build up. I am limited to what I have on hand and my bank account is drained from my jet boat project so I can't go buy a set of aluminum like I would like to. Can anyone tell me which ones would be best to use?
Set # 1: casting 336781 (113cc)
Set # 2: casting 346236 (113cc)
Set # 3: casting 3933148 (122.1cc) these are marked "M.truck" which I believe means they are from a marine motor.
I have the block, crank, rods, and manifold, so I need to choose which heads to use and what cam to get. I want to make around 450hp.
Thanks,
BigJet(and now v-drive too)Daddy

Your 781's and 236's are simi open chamber, full open chamber are 118cc's. The 148's are Truck heads, they are low compression. Since the budget is low, I would suggest selling the heads you have and try and pick up a set of 049's, they are one of the best factory oval port heads around, you would not have any trouble getting 450hp from your 396..I ran 95mph in my Lavey with a 402 (.030 396) using 049's...Just my opinion.......

Of those three the 781 casting is proabaly the best the 236 are very small port heads im not sure about the 148 none of these castings are particularly high performance but if I had to choose the 781 would be it .

Sorry about the frown before, can't they change the default to a smiley face?
More Info: If these are on a 396, then there were on a L-78 375hp, if they were on a 427 they were on a L-71 or L72 425 or 435 HP. 109cc
Sure you don't want to trade?

I'm running the 049's on a 468...I would like to know what else is done to your motor (Compression, cam, intake carb) Blower? Thats giving you that kind of Horse Power.

Sorry Bro... nothing in my E-mail. Still looking to see how ya get 649 Hp+ 582 tq. from a 468 motor. Unless it got a blower and or 15:1 comp. As I said before I'm running a 468, 049's bigger valves all worked up heads, 10:1 comp. with a single carb, NO NOS!....Bring it on...I'm all ears!

Hammerdown, we make over 650. The motor is a 12.5:1, fully flowed 990's 2 1/4primary headers, 1400 cfm of intake and a big cam on racing fuel. Those numbers are quite possible with the BBC naturally aspirated. Theres even a chevy book that gives many detailed combo set-ups with the dyno numbers for baseline set-ups. You probably know this though, but thought I would say it. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
I just read your post again, are 049's rectangular port HP heads?

I would like to see this combo too. I run a 468 with 049's 2.30 stainless intake 1.90 ex. 10-1 comp 600 lift cam makes 535 hp.

A dart tunnell ram lots of work$$$$ 750 braswells on top motor turns 75-7800 rpm.. thats it no secrets ..i have to admit i am always afraid i will break something that r.p.m. oh yeah with the mag i had and sold the msd i bought helped out alot from the bottom to the top....justs kills the batt......

FLYTE RISK...I here what your saying...but that compression isn't to friendly on a river boat. True what your saying...and a fellow racer friend of mine pretty much spoke to me about the same motor combo that you speek of. I'm just not that intrested in that much compression, or the agg. that goes with it. How about a 540 or even a 572, with around 9:75 or even 10:1 I'm thinking it may be more user friendly...on pump gas!

I agree it's not that hard to make some big power, but it's not gonna be 650 hp. with 049 chevy OVAL port heads. My 496 in the hydro makes 772 hp. and I turn it 8400, but it is highly modified with 14-1 comp. merlin heads and a 700 hp. nitrous kit.

One more thing, sorry just remember all of your h.p is made in the heads.. question is how much you want to spend??????Jet daddy if you could find some 990s a good solid lifter cam (ENGLE ph #310450-0806 ) go with it. 450 h.p is very easy to accomplish it is all about how it is put together also machine shop and you checking up on them i.e assy. of motor ha ha good luck....
