Flashover, be yourself and make sure to make eye contact with all your interviewers. Have your most recent resume with you and make sure you have a copy to give each interviewer and have a copy for yourself incase they want to ask you any questions about items on your resume. If you are interviewing for a Firefighter position your resume should be no longer than 1 page and be easy to read and follow and be specific to the position you are applying for. An objective ( the position you are trying for) should be first then education, experience, certs, professional memberships ect last. Community service is a big thing if they ask about who you are as a person and remember that they have heard every speal there is so try to be creative but genuine. If you are interviewing for engineer or captain then I am sorry for telling you what you already know. These practices have been successful for me and worked for the last 3 job offers I recieved. Good luck, Nick

admit to "experimenting in alternative lifestyles"
declare what you WON"T do early in the interview
use racial slurs as often as possible.
ask if you can bring your camera on calls to add to your collection.

I Made a pretty sweet outline on M.S word with watermarks and all that lists everything you just said. I am already a volunteer for this dept but i realy need the full time job. I realize what mistakes i made last time and hopefully i have fixed them and will kick a$$ this time.

It's pretty fun work i have been doing it for about 3 years as a volunteer it can be real exciting. Also you work 10 - 12 days a month, good pay, good benafits, 20yr retirement. Can't beat that. Plus always being able to help people out makes your day alot better.

Answering the questions isn't to bad it's just knowing what they are looking for. You could be the most qualified person in the group and if you don't have a tie on your fugged.... There is a lot of wierd little sh_t that they will trow out when you least expect it.

Is this for Salt Lake City Fire? If so, you'll be happy there. Lots of good guys. Not a lot of partiers, but, they're there.
You've heard lots of good advise here. I assume you've practiced in the past and just want some fine tuning of your interview skills. I've sat on many oral boards for new recruits and everytime certain things always stand out.
Dress/groom professionally, be confident, look everyone in the eye, speak with confidence and all the other stuff you heard here. Also, learn everything you can about teh agency you're testing for. What's their history, call volumn, personnel, equipment/apparatus, what are their future plans, master plan, council members names, chiefs names, number of stations etc?
Good luck and keep us posted.

If you can tie the mission statement and/or dept values in with some of tyour answers to the situational questions that looks really good. Also don't let them make you go back on your answers, unless you are proven completely wrong, if so admit your mistake. Remember alot of the questions don't have a right or wrong answer. They want to see your reasoning for answering the way you did. Try not to give the same answer everybody else is giving. These guys have probably been sitting on these boards for several days and usually keep hearing the same answers over and over. Be original and give honest answers, it will be refreshing for them. Lastly, possibly one of the most important things you can do is have a well thought out closing statement if they ask you at the end "Is there anything you would like to add". Also be extremely courteous to the secretary or who ever greets you at the interview site.
Good luck....

Flashover, you've been given some good advice, and the only thing I want to add, is that you should be extremely confident. Confident, but not cocky. Remember, in addition to answering the questions, you are there selling yourself. Confidence goes a long way. Don't waver on any of your answers, and be direct and to the point. Don't forget ethics, and the position you are applying for, as well as the chain of command.
Good Luck!!!,
Rick

One more thing, learn the departments mission statement, and if applicable, incorporate it in you're answers. Also, never lie in an oral interview, but definately embelish any and all experience. Both job experience, and life experience as it might apply to the job.

Flashover,
A couple more things:
Dont forget to say yes Sir or yes Maam. It is overlooked way too often these days with yah. Also: Answer the questions directly(Example: Q-Have you ever had a conflict with a supervisor? A- Yes Sir I have, and this is what happened....................blah blah blah. Do not just start rambling without answering the question.
A chief's interview will be geared as a personal interview, and they might ask questions such as: What are your weaknesses? How do you think we could improve our department.
I am assuming you have been to the chamber of commerce and no EVERYTHING about the local communities and all of the Fire Department stats and Target hazards per station. These are the bare minimum knowledge requirements for the firefighter position. Lastly: Know the application, the salary, and all of the benifits. Know the hiring process, all the way through the academy schedule and probationary period. Know the JOB! Know the difference between the duties/responsibilities of a firefighter and the day at a fire station. There IS a difference. Good luck.
