There was an effort to bring the mothballed USS Iowa to the bay area and make a museum - even Sens. Chow-Boxer and Feinstein thought it was a good idea so the city council voted on it
8-3 AGAINST. WHY??
One of the pole smokin' council members said he couldn't support something tied to the military because of it's handling of gays. Another said it would be like supporting the War in Iraq!! WTF?
Sooooooo. Stockton is stepping up and it looks like they may get it - they fully embrace everything connected with the Iowa.
San Francisco sonz-a-bitches?

Well... now hang in here with me on this...
The Iowa was built to fight the Japanese (i.e. WWII)
Winning WWII made us a world power, which plundged us into the cold war...
The cold war begat some real nasties, including our friends in Afgahnastan and the middle east
Which caused 9/11...
Which lead to the war in Iraq...
... and so in the end, the Iowa and all the brave men who fought and served on her represent the war in Iraq.
See, it's easy to think like a liberal when you really put your mind to it. :D
In all seriousness, I hope someone steps up and preserves this great ship.

Not to get off the subject, but the original point of this thread reminded me of this email I recieved yesterday. People, including the Governing body in SF should appreciate what the military does for them, even if they don't agree with all they do or their stance on a subject.
Subject: Air Force Officer's Response F-16 Noise complaint
It says it all!
Game, set, match!
From the Arizona Republic OpEd.
A complaint post from a moron, and the reply:
Complaint:
Quote:
A wake-up call from Luke's jets
Jun. 23, 2005 12:00 AM
"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show?
Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet.
Imagine our good fortune!
Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special?
Any response would be appreciated."
The reply is classic, and a testament to the professionalism and heroism of the folks in the armed services. The response:
Quote:
Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):
On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques.
Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.
At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.
Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.
A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.
The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?"
The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.
Lt. Col. Scott Pleus
CO 63rd Fighter Squadron

It doesn't matter how much open space there is around a base, someone, somewhere has a problem with what the boys are doing. Just the fact they CAN complain TO THE GOVERNMENT about the noise says it all.

That's where the Iowa is now, I think. About 15 miles up from the bay.
To get back on the topic, sort of.....
Here is a picture of the so-called "Moth Ball Fleet", in the Carquinez Straits, near Benicia, 15 or 20 miles up from SF, where the Iowa is now stored.
http://www.benicia.k12.ca.us/bhs/resources/community/pic6.jpg
I've heard it said that if this fleet was activated, it would be the 3rd or 4th largest naval fleet in the world.
Here is some info on it......
" Residents of Benicia and regular commuters who use highway 680 are accustomed to seeing the long, gray lines of ships that have been harbored on our Carquinez Straits. In fact, the ships have become a part of the accepted landscape. Some of the vessels are part of the Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Fleet, waiting for America's next call to arms to ship troops and supplies overseas. However, the majority of ships are awaiting annihilation with the exception of a select few which will end up in historic maritime museums and parks. The ships that may be presented as historical landmarks are the destroyer USS Sterett and the Navy tug USS Hoga, the fleets oldest and most famous vessel. The Hoga is the last floating survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
The Suisun Fleet has stood anchored since 1946 when America found out it had ended World War II with surplus cargo ships. "We had built more than 3,000 cargo ships for the war and we had a lot left over," Suisun Bay Fleet Supervisor Joe Pecoraro said. He also commented that the ships were nicknamed "Mothball Fleet" which is misleading. "Mothball" suggests something that is put away not to be used again. "

This was posted on Yahoo's page today. Same 'ol.
SAN FRANCISCO - The USS Iowa joined in battles from World War II to Korea to the Persian Gulf. It carried President Franklin Roosevelt home from the Teheran conference of allied leaders, and four decades later, suffered one of the nation's most deadly military accidents.
Veterans groups and history buffs had hoped that tourists in San Francisco could walk the same teak decks where sailors dodged Japanese machine-gun fire and fired 16-inch guns that helped win battles across the South Pacific.
Instead, it appears that the retired battleship is headed about 80 miles inland, to Stockton, a gritty agricultural port town on the San Joaquin River and home of California's annual asparagus festival.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., a former San Francisco mayor, helped secure $3 million to tow the Iowa from Rhode Island to the Bay Area in 2001 in hopes of making touristy Fisherman's Wharf its new home.
But city supervisors voted 8-3 last month to oppose taking in the ship, citing local opposition to the Iraq war and the military's stance on gays, among other things.
"If I was going to commit any kind of money in recognition of war, then it should be toward peace, given what our war is in Iraq right now," Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said.
Feinstein called it a "very petty decision."
"This isn't the San Francisco that I've known and loved and grew up in and was born in," Feinstein said.
San Francisco's maritime museum already has one military vessel — the USS Pampanito, an attack submarine that sank six Japanese ships during World War II and has about 110,000 visitors a year.
Officials in Stockton couldn't be happier. They've offered a dock on the river, a 90,000-square-foot waterfront building and a parking area, and hope to attract at least 125,000 annual visitors.
After the Korean war, the Iowa was decommissioned and placed in reserve in a Philadelphia shipyard for three decades. In 1988, it was recalled to duty escorting oil supply ships safely in and out danger in the Persian Gulf. In 1989, 47 sailors were killed in an explosion that tore through a gun turret during a training exercise.
The warship, decommissioned by the Navy in 1990, is currently anchored with a mothballed fleet in Suisun Bay, near the mouth of the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta.
San Francisco's rejection of such a storied battleship is a slap in the nation's face, said Douglass Wilhoit, head of Stockton's Chamber of Commerce.
"We're lucky our men and women have sacrificed their lives ... to protect our freedom," Wilhoit said. "Wherever you stand on the war in Iraq ... you shouldn't make a decision based on philosophy."
Rep. Richard W. Pombo, R-Calif., has sponsored legislation authorizing the ship's permanent move to Stockton. Feinstein has countered with a bill to open bidding to any California city.
The two versions will have to be reconciled by a House-Senate conference committee considering the Pentagon spending bill.

I'm with ya on that sentiment Seadog.
The 9-gun firings are even more impressive when you realize just how rarely they were ever done. The recoil from 9 16" rifles firing simultaneously not only pushed the 58,000 TON ship sideways through the water, it put severe strains on the entire ship, superstructure included. Standard practice was a 3-round ripple fire, firing all 3 turrents, 1 gun each, simultaneously, sending 9
1900 or 2700 pound projectiles up to 23 miles. :lightsabe
212,000HP from her engines too. :mix:

Why not put it in Alameda right across the bay from the Granola city. It already has an Aircraft Carrier museum and the people support out military. I just can't see Stockton attracting 125,000 people unless they are gang bangers or illegals
