when my bro graduated from the fire academy, i got him an axe, a gallon gas can and some matches...nothing like job security
seriously though, he had the axe handle stained and the head polished and mounted on a plaque with a pic from his graduation

Exactly, when he's on scene he needs to take down a lot of info, which he needs to put into his report.

Some good ideas posted. Like Littleroweboat says, he'll be doing lots more paper work now. I nice pen set and one of the aluminum Posse Boxes is a good idea. You can get it at a uniform shop or on the internet.
I've always liked this idea......You can get him an ax, chromed head if you like, and have little brass plates that mount onto the handle. Kind of like a log of his fire career
The first plate can read his name and hire date. For example " Fire Fighter Joe Smith, Orange County Fire Authority, hired August 25th, 1984"
The next brass plate can read "Joe Smith, Promoted to Fire Engineer, January 10th, 1989". Keep this going for all his promotions and/or significant milestones in the fire service.
Just leave enough room on the handle for the final brass plate for his retirement date.
Good luck.

Don't get the gas! You might get a "Waste of Finite" ticket in AZ like I did a couple weeks ago.

a box of cigars was mentioned above, good idea, however if he smokes 'em w/ his crew they'll be gone for ever..
a great gift would be a knife. We use knives every day. Nothing tooooo fancy, just a hard core knife.

Come on baby! Just because it looks like a hose and get's you all wet doesn't mean I'm a fireman! How about something he should be good at...maybe a nice detail kit.
