I have a 3 week old baby girl. We were planning on taking her with us on my cousins pontoon boat next weekend at Lake Piru.
Is it true that anyone under 12 years old needs to have a life Jacket?
If so, what would be suitable for a newborn. I've been looking online and can't find anything good for a child under 15 pounds. My daughter is only 8 pounds.
Any info on the legality or where to find a life jacket would be much help. Thanks
Eric

Don't.
A child that age doesn't have the ability to deal with the heat.
If you want to spend the day makin sure the child is hydrated and covered from the sun then...don't.
A friend took thier NB campin to BV with our group once. I kept askin is the kid OK.
Ya shes fine. she just crys alot.
Finaly she quits cryin and he says shes fine.
So I go lookat her and shes nice and cool to the touch.
So I finally get in his face about heat exhaustion and stroke and he makes his wife take her home and she decides to go by the walk in (only smart thing that ***** ever did.) and they kept her over night to hydrate her on the bag.
Start your kids life off by showin your daughter what responsible parents she has.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but it's just my $.02

Sorry to have to ask this question, but why would you take an 8lb baby on a boat? You have the rest of her life to do these things. We first took both our boys out only once they could hold their head up and most importantly, once the vest fit properly. None of it is going to do any good if they are helpless! Be a responsible parent.
Just my $.02

ghostrider...
i had a similar question/story that i posted over @ yamahajetboaters.com!!!
and you should of seen the responses i got... dont ever take a baby out that little.. heat exhaustion.... boats are dangerous.. blah blah blah
Let me tell you i just got back from a 3 week vacation : aww... f it let me just copy my story here: all im saying below is that we took our 2 month daughter and tried it out and for US it turned out beautiful our daughter loves the water and the boat. 3 weeks may be TOO YOUNG because you cant give them water yet. check w/ your doctor and keep the child outta the sun, well hydrated and always covered w/ wet or damp towel
Well we just literally walked in the door from our 3 week boating vacation trip
we started out in laughlin lake mohave from June 30- July 8th..
we took the baby (2 months at this time) out to the lake and the river.
But we were careful here going out late after 2pm and only staying until about 7pm
then off to Vegas July 8th-18th were we spent alot of time around the casinos... but we did make a couple of trips out to lake mead and hung around Hoover Dam ... again going out a little later in the day.. but none the less we hade the baby with us.... and before i get to the end of this story.. SHE is doing great on the water.. loving the boat.
Now off to Havasu for the 18-21 here we went out a little more earlier in the day.... we hung out in the channel.. over to copper canyon took a ride up to the sandbar and had lunch at the Topock Marina. These were all day events and the baby did great!!!!
for the next couple of days 22-23 we stayed at the Bluewater and just hung out at the sandbar.. then for the weekend over to BIG River and we hung out w/ some friends.
The reason i detailed our tip here is that our two month old daughter did GREAT on this trip.... she loved the water and we were careful to keep her outta the sun and well hydrated!
She did wonderful on the boat.. she had here baby life vest on during runs and would sleep most of the time during the run but would almost wake up instantly when i turned the boat off.
Im not saying this is for everyone.. it may be a little rough for more fair skinned children.. it was extremely HOTT during the few weeks we were making run. But i am saying it worked out perfectly for us!!
OH YEAH>. the boat performed beautifully all during this trip

Is it all worth it? I am a long time boater, but my kids are more important than boating. Beleive it or not!
THINK! :argue:
