I mostly always have used the motorcraft FL-1A on my Ford small block.

What do you consider as a high performance filter? Capacity, the size of particulate efficiency, longevity or combination of all? In this regard I'd rank:
Amsoil
Mobil 1
Hastings as top 3.

How are the premium off the shelf filters such as Purolater Pure One, premium Fram Filter, or AC Delco Premiums?

What about the fram hp filters I just put one on my boat after hearing horror stories of other filters collapsing(?)

I've been using the Purolator Pure One (blue) on my boat and 2 cars for 3-4 years with no problems at all. Don't know much about the new high performance Fram's. My guess is they are both about the same.

Hey slowride, ive been using WIX filters for years. WIX makes filter for Carquest, NAPA and Big A auto parts. The H/P filters have better filter media, better bypass valve and a stronger housing. Each company that carries WIX filters leave the last 3 #'s on the part # alone and add there own prefix #'s.
Carquest pt # 85622 Chevy and 85620 Ford
NAPA pt # 1622 Chevy and 1620 Ford
and so on. I might have reversed the #'s so just look at the O ring, Chevys O ring is allmost the same size as the filter and the Ford is a little smaller. I know, its probably more than you wanted to know but hey, it just my .02
