Since I am a mechanical moron.... would an engine like this last longer than a blower motor? I'm guessing it would. Would it last as long as say a Merc Blue motor, like a 525?

Depends on alot of things. You need compression to make HP...whether you get that through boost or static, it's gonna be tougher on the engine than a milder motor.
The one advantage a natutally aspirated motor has is that it doesn't have to turn the blower (that robs HP). For example, a 1,000HP blower motor may need 100 HP to turn the blower, so that's alot of extra fuel you have to dump in the motor (over a n/a or turbo motor).
Just my "non-expert" opinion...

It's definately possible, but I am not sure I would want to shift that Bravo in gear with the CAM profile needed to make 850 hp on a single four. :supp:

well maybe, lets go to the math.
I dunno what size it is so lets assume 502 or 540:
size x rpm / 3456 x ve% = carb size CFM
502 x 5500 / 3456 = 800 CFM's (@100% VE)
540 x 5500 / 3456 = 859 CFM's (@100% VE)
so its possible.....
now probable, thats another story! ;)
I still wouldn't want to shift that into gear with that cam. At least not with my bank account.... ;)

YA 14:1 ... who wants that? ... I had peto build my 580CID and insisted on single carb that ran on pump gas witha reasonable cam profile... he got me 648peakHP which was good... 850HP seems unlikely on 91 and 72mph sounds to me like 500-550HP

Now, at risk of starting anything, let me say this; I raced this boat with a stock 525 powered Conquest and my GPS was showing me about 79 mph.
The boat that is for sale here was pulling me by 2-3 mph. I also happen to
know with a certainty that our boat will run about 83 to 84 mph with the new
600 from Merc in there. What does all of this mean? This motor must make
about 600 to 625 hp. Granted, the boat was full of about 100 gallons of gas and lots of personal stuff etc.
If this motor really makes 850 hp, it'd be running 95 mph. The engine builder stands by his dyno sheet and the first owner of the boat goes by what the engine builder says. Then last year, Charlie buys the boat and was told
that it had 850 hp. I guess what I am saying is this, the boat is clean and neat and has every option in the world on it. I believe that the asking price is a good one.

Back to the motor. I just had Larry Peto build me a 548EFI motor that dynoed at 653 on 91 octane. I find 850 hard to believe. My .02.

Keith E. Sayre
08-19-2005, 10:04 AM
Prosthogod: Check out the post #28 that I made about the HP. As I stated
there, the original owner of this boat built it thinking that his "850" engine
would make the Conquest run about 95 mph. Unfortunately, the motor makes about 625hp in my opinion. The boat runs about 83 to 84 mph. the current seller is merely trying to sell the boat and has passed along information from the former owner that he got from the engine builder with the dyno.
I guess what i'm saying here is don't get the idea that the current owner of this boat is fibbing or anything. They're just going off what they heard.
This is a beautiful and VERY well appointed boat for a great price. Someone
will get a lot of value, call me for any particulars if you wish.

I've met Tom and think he's a pretty decent guy. Also seems to do nice work in his shop. However, I do think that his dyno numbers are pretty damn optimistic. We all know (I hope) that dyno numbers are only as good as the "calibration" of the dyno. If the atmospheric correction parameters are off, the numbers will be jacked one way or another. I personally do not believe 850 hp from a n/a motor that idles well enough to comfortably shift a Bravo, certainly not with Chevy style heads at least. Raised port heads, maybe. My motor has most every trick I could think of, pushes the limits of pump gas (10.8:1), and doesn't make anywhere near 850 hp. There may be a few ponies left in there due to non-optimum tuning on the efi, but not 40. Like Keith said, if that boat doesn't run at least 95 it ain't making 850 hp!
