We have a dyers 671 on a 468 alum heads 8:1 JE's h-beams full balanced eagle rotating assembly, full roller motor, and 2 stage 5 bigs performance 750 dp carbs. We are unsure of the current boost but its around 5lb which it will stay until we have a chance to order new pulleys/belt.
We have yet to start the motor, its almost ready!!
QUESTION:
What dictates where the timing should be set? I want it to be reliable, and not pushing the line between safe and unsafe. We plan to mix 114 octane with high test 70/30 Im thinking 34??? Is 36 too much?? Will bumping up the boost result in the need to adjust the timing more?? Whats safe and whats unsafe??
Any help will be appreciated
Ryan
(Motor will be in an 18'6" v-drive)

If you're not going to run a timing retard box, set it at 28 degrees max timing !
I've built several river motors with Blowers and they are all at 28 degrees with lockout dist's.and are living.
It's safe to have an oil temp gauge, boost builds heat fast........ If you're good at tune-ups you can run more timing, but as boost goes up timing comes down. 28 degrees is safe at 5/7 lbs.

For what it's worth:
Put a pyrometer on those 28 degree timed motors and look at that exhaust temperature. You may find 34 is a lot better deal to keep exhaust valves alive.

I agree 34 total lockout would be nice on egt temps.
when I dyno my motor 32 was good but the motor liked 34 better
cooler temps .

I had my timing at 31 full advance and the egt's were on the high side.
Advance and they came down..
Now at 36

that's with a intercooler and good gas, right??----my old 468 liked 35 if the weather was good and cool----(no cooler)----the pistons did show a little detenation after burning one down when a lifter broke
