You're saying a 30 Foot V Bottom boat will do 74.1 GPS with a 496Mag HO??

phebus
08-05-2005, 07:33 AM
Whether a boat can go 70, 72, whatever is irrevelant. Finding a boat that fits your needs is more important. I'd much rather go 66 in a boat that has a comfortable ride, and my passengers enjoy then go 72 in a boat that is fast but doesn't fit my needs. Who are you going to beat with a 496HO that matters anyway?

I'm just quoting what I've read. I've personally never ridden on one, but it seems right.
Read that thread I posted a link to and check out the bottom on that boat. Multiple steps. Hull weight is quite light for a 30'er - less than 5,000lbs. Top that off with a 7' beam and it makes it all quite believable.
My benchmark is the Sunsation 288. Compared to it the Y2K is longer, as light or lighter, narrower and has a much more aggressive hull design (multiple vs single step).
I bet if you talked to John Coen (builder) he'd even put a windshield on it for you!

101.3 mph on GPS with full tanks, 30 pack, 150 degree day 3 guys, Ron Moyes driving, Bob Teague at the throttle, and me in the back. Oh yeah, Bob Leach on the shore with the Stalker radar gun. Of course I removed my turbulators and installed a K&N filter for these speeds. Did I mention it had a 35 pitch prop. Did this on Havasu in 6ft chop on Sat afternoon too!!!!!  :D NSF

Best I've seen in my 25' Shockwave Tremor with a 496HO is 72.8mph on GPS. Fairly light load, labbed 24P Bravo 1 but no wind chop on a mid 80 degree day. Realisitically with a few peeps, coolers, full tank 68-70mph depending on the weather / water conditions.
But all that is with a pretty big stereo. 4 subs, heavy 3/4" marine plywood sub box, 3 batteries, 1/0 gauge wiring, 3 amps, 4 - 6X9's, 4 - 6.5's. I bet my rig with a 1/2 tank of gas weighs close to 5,000 pounds.
Very satisfied with the top end and performance of the boat. Especially considering it has a 24 degree bottom, no pad, notched transom, etc.
Subsequent addition of Rex marine mufflers cut my rpm by about 200 and my top speed by about 2-3 mph.

RIGHT ON, finally some real world speeds and besides if you want to go fast why would you get a 496 mag or HO anyway. They are fine for what they are and I enjoy my boat very much and it does 64.8 mph right now, loaded just like it is when we boat. leave the speed for the blue motors, the twin Whackas, and the custom motors!!!! I honestly don't like going over 80mph in a boat.
I appreciate all of the fast boats out there and will hopefully go for a ride in Jackpunx Stoker one day but I will never own a family boat that goes over 80.
I feel much more comfortable in a fast car with seat belts and a roof.Things can go bad either way but atleast I will have a fighting chance if something goes wrong.

The point isn't the 496HO. I just picked that motor cuz it's fairly popular. It's more of a comparison of different hulls with the same power. I could easily have said single 500 EFI boats but there's probably alot less of them out there. I'm not saying the 496 is the stinky poo, wanted to see what hull make the most of available HP, what ever motor it is. And probably should've went further and said vee bottom.

good point, except I know two of the test drivers and get to hear the behind the scenes stuff. A Howard 25 Bullet will get you 74 mph in nice conditions. They will run 70 with all of your junk on board in just about any conditions. BTW, In the world of "Reality TV" I am seriously pushing for what I call "Reality Boat Testing". Most of the manufacturers will hate it, but it will be very cool for the consumer, Here is what I am working on:
All boats will be of equal length
All Boats will have 50 gallons of fuel
All boats will have the same 4 people on board for testing
All boats will have a cooler, mooring supplies, and safety gear
All boats will be tested the second week of July in AZ or NV
This is the minimum real world scenario, and this is what people will expect their boat to run when they pick it up from the dealer. I have been talking to the right people about this, we will see what happens.
Lastly: IMO, any 24-26V running an honest 70+ mph on Radar/GPS is an efficient set up.

phebus
08-05-2005, 07:48 PM
I think the whole "which is the fastest thull" arguement is of no merit when it comes to production boats. Any manufacturer could make a boat with a super light lay-up, a narrow beam, and a bottom that's not suited for real world conditions, and produce a faster boat, but who would want that if you weren't racing? I am definately more interested in all all around boat, that can haul people, gear, etc., safely, efficiently and comfortably.

Above as posted by Dave of Extreme Boats http://www.extrememarinetampa.com/
This is the most impressive boat I've seen yet as for speed with a 496HO. 29' V. First one out of the mold. Smaller in every way than Superboat but, still very impressive. I've seen 78.5 GPS with a 28 bravo1 but he's said he's seen 83 as quoted above.

I was curious. What is the best speed you have seen from a single engine, stock 496HO? Any length.
By all means 16' Bayliner GPS 146mph

Funny you mention this. We are not letting our boat tested without six people in it, 80 gallons of fuel, full cooler and the mooring supplies that come with the boat.
STFB for the results.

A Nortic doing 80 MPH 25' a 30' doing 74 plus. Mr River Otter where do I sign up. I have a 28 V with 759 hp @ 5750 rpm and 750 tq @ 4200 my boat has only hit 90.1 one time and lets me have 87mph all day.
What prop and drive are you using to achieve this?

Thats outstanding! Good to hear, unfortunately a lot of public education will have to come with that end result in speed, but I think it will be worth it for you..........................Good Luck.

I agree with almost all your criteria except the length one. That should be allowed to be a variable. I'd rather see the boats catagorized by price rather than length.
Also, the runs should occur in 2 water surface conditions: nearly dead calm and then on 2' chop.
Personally, I've chosen to give up some top speed for a deeper V to give a smoother ride on rough water.

Right on ! Line up a Cobra kit car with a 5L ford engine next to a Lotus super 7 with a 5L engine and see which car will be faster ? HP per ton wins .
BTW , saw a Lotus Caterham with a DOHC Alfa Romeo engine with rear tranny and inboard brakes ,pretty cool .

This question needs further definition....
Are you talking V-hulls only?? Cause we all know cat hulls will almost always be more efficient. My 22 Daytona scoots across the water at an easy 80+ with only a 26p right now.
And as for ride comfort, anyone that's been in a cat will tell you there is nothing smoother. It's like riding on a cloud :D :D

If that's true it will be a dominating boat in Factory 1. World Championship boats were hard pressed to see 84 with 525's, switching to 496's slowed them down a bunch as intended.

Next season they may be on top of the F1 class. I think the drivers need a little more seat time personally. TKO is retiring thier record setting Activator. So this is the perfect opotunity for Extreme to pick up the slack. Your right, I think 83 with a 496HO is reaching for the stars also in this boat.
A 30' Superboat has done 74+ with a 496HO. That's the most impressive I've seen for a 31' 7" single. Anything else out there with those numbers over 30'?

It is one thing to get the boat to a top speed it is another thing keeping it there running in conditions that are not perfect. The one thing I hate about a smaller boat like the one I have is that I have to come out of the throttle when I see a swell too big. :crossx:

81.1mph on GPS was my max for the day. Advantage 25 open bow
Of course I quickly realized that the boat was on the trailer heading for the water when it hit that number. Had ya goin for a minute didn't I. Everybody knows the first liar don't have a chance so I waited for this thread to mature a bit :crossx:

You serious? Becuase I know of one that meets the requirements. Shit to be honest I think it might run in the 90's somewheres. They usually ran a 454 or 502 as it's been awhile since they've built them. 502 is 10HP less then a 496HO at 415HP.
I can provide magazine test data, and I can probably track one down for a "REAL WORLD" high 80 low 90mph ride if you want..
Interested?

LOL.. I dont go on here much anymore.. but.. You find the boat.. (one the still has a working blackhawk) (they dont make them anymore.. and they break) and we'll see it in person.. My boat with the stock 502 has done more than 100 when it was Al's boat. 30p prop, 136 gears. I know that Knuckleheads boat will do the same thing now.. and thats with a drive that you can turn with when your done going fast..LOL (black hawks dont like to turn much)
Im pretty opened minded and have been boating for a while.. there is always someone faster or better at this or that.. Im just waiting to meet him..LOL
