how tall are the tires?

Flashover

They are BFG All Terrains that are the metric size of the stock tire that the truck came with. I think that would be around a 31.

man if you can't tow 10k lbs w/3:55's and 5.7
I know of another manufacture that puts 5.8l under the hood :D
don't go nuts with the gears, try 3:89's great towing gear and with 31's should put those rpm's right at 2200 in OD at 65 mph
I am sure Jordy will do the math for us :D

i had the same truck and i did everything to it like 4;10 gears, headers, programmer. it still sucked going up hills, my 2 cent, trade it in for a ford diesel. that was the best thing i ever did.

Try going with maybe a diffrent cam to get the torque curve where it needs to be?
Just a diffrent twist to try & find a solution to the problems.

I think somewhere between 3800 & 4200lbs...

If your boat/trailer combo weighs what you say ,there is some serious problem with your truck's setup. Any 1/2 ton pickup with 3.73 gears should pull 6000-7000 lbs effortlessly .My 1998 GC [ last year for the pushrod engine] has a 6500 lbs tow capacity and tows my 24.6 Spectra through the summit [4200'] to lake okanagan without a sweat . I towed my 257 Mirage [ 8380 lbs on the trailer ] through Hope/Princeton hwy as well without any drama. Tandem trailer has 13" brakes that's most important  . Toyota Tundra's come with 4.10 ,hence their great pulling with a cammer engine.

I think the elevation change is around 3000 + feet. The semi trucks only do about 15-20 mph up the summit. Towing around town is fine. But three of the good lakes to go boating at you need to go over the summitt..

There's probably a reason the big rigs are hurting at the top of the hill, it must be pretty steep so no wonder you're truck is feeling it too.
Don't listen to all the BS. 4.10's will work great. I have had two 1/2 ton Chevy's one with the 5.7 and one with the 5.3. I had 4.10's in both and it was a great combo with 31" tires. Decent freeway RPM's and good pulling power. I only went to 4.56's when I went to 35" tall tires. I now have the diesel and man it tows great pulling anything but to answer you're question 4.10's.
Good luck.

I would go with 4:10 gears which would help alot.

Flashover , the semis and greyhounds do the same speed [15-20 mph] around the snowsheds going uphill on the coquihalla hwy, while I could do 45 mph with the spectra in tow .My spectra must be around 6-6500 lbs with the trailer .The GC has 285 footpound torque at 3200 rpm. The tach never goes higher than 4K at the steepest hills there.
The main thing I found in my trailering [over 35 yrs ] experience , that a factory equipped tow vehicle outperforms the aftertought mods.

I'm going to go against the general concensus. 4.56 gears really help my Maxima tow in the mountains.

Thanks for your help. The summit is a biach. But if i want a new boat i have to keep the old truck. I would love to have a used duramax but that will have to wait..
Thanks again.
P.s does $1.500 sound like a good price to have it done. that has been the quote i have been getting.

hey Tom , how's things ? You Maxima needs 4.56 gears just to get go :shift: If these guys would only know what the Coke is like for towing :eat: . Been in Kelowna for a week staying at the Grand . What a blast when you don't have to pay for anything ;) .

I wish I was there.
... although our weather here is pretty sweet right now. I've been spending tons of time at the lake and having a terrific time of it.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay, SO. Perhaps one day we will get a chance to hook up on the water in the Okanagan.

In my opinon 4.56 is to much.. go 4.11 with that small of a tire
1500 is to much for just front/rear gears.. if it includes an eaton out back your probably in the ball park.

4:10 if your going to stay with the same size tires.
If your thinking about going to a taller tire go for the 4:56's
