msd distributor

I have part number 8460 msd distributor do i need to run a box with this distributor? i have had problems with my 454 chevy motor and am down to a distributor problem as the only thing left causing my problems. I have a thread in gear head forum titled 454 engine help.

If that is the distributor with the light blue module attached to the lower outside of the housing, then, no, you don't need a "box" for it to work.

Yes it does have the blue module attached to the distributor. Would a bad distributor cause the problems i am having like detonation??\
